Less than 1/4 of Scots feel safer with nuclear weapons in Clyde

I will respectfully disagree.  The new and increased defence budget focuses on modernising the United Kingdom’s defence and army.  Whilst Trident may be here now, it will certainly be replaced once we have a better way of defending the United Kingdom and I believe this will be off shore as no one wants nuclear weapons on their doorstep.

I imagine in any case an independent Scotland would still lean heavily toward the UK for defence co-operation simply due to the geography

I think we are seeing an end to physical warfare. ‘Warfare’ is tending to take place online. We saw it in the 2016 US they were vote rigging from the Russian in favour of Trump. They should be focus on to solving these problems rather than investing money into nuclear warheads

Yeah, this was a point I brought up in a previous thread about independence and costs.  There would most definitely be a deal on defence and I imagine Scotland would continue to pay into what would be a British Isles defence pool.

I went through a phase of watching a lot of documentaries about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Terrifying and compelling viewing. Listening to the stories of the survivors was gut wrenching. And remember the sheer power of some of  today's arsenal is over 3000 times greater than those that were detonated over Japan. Doesn't bear thinking about....

Yeah, it is just what makes sense, and that's fine. Scotland becoming independent doesn't mean it has to do everything alone. A lot of countries have defence co-operation treaties that relieve them of a substantial burden. No shame in that. But outright refusing this reality is literally feels above reals. Could Scotland do it alone? Sure. But it doesn't make sense to

This is what we’re doing.  After the results of the Brexit referendum and Trump, the UK has heavily been pouring in resources to try and counter the power of disinformation other countries can feed to us.  The new budget basically covered battling that, modernising our army so it’s drone based rather than humans on the front lines and it’s about keeping up with other countries and their defences.

During the pandemic, Russia was floating nuclear carrying warships just off the British Isles as a form of intimidation :saladga:

Yeah agreed.  The U.K. still supplies a lot of the EU’s defence and information because we are just very good at it and at the end of the day, you want your neighbours to be safe because that keeps you safe.

Ahh, I never realised that. I don’t really keep up with defence stuff tbh. It seems more reactive in my opinion. The 2016 referendum was headed by Dominic Cummins who had ties to Russian (if I am right). With what’s going on in Russian and Ukraine at the moment it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

I think that’s why we’ve now seen such a bump in spending, we were falling behind and becoming reactive when the U.K. used to be at the cutting edge.

LMAO yeah the 2016 referendum was an absolute mess riddled with corruption.  Referendums on such things need to have an outright majority.  I know you’re pro independence but in my mind, there should be a 60% yes or no.  If 60% vote yes then independence happens, if 60% votes no then another referendum is called in 20 years.  If it falls in the grey area around 50%, another referendum can be called in 10 years.  This is how it should have been with Brexit and how I think referendums should be done in the future.

Totally, they need to combat this problem before it’s too late. ‘Fake News’ and vote rigging is a massive problem.
if the next Scottish referendum goes in favour the union they should be a limit on when the next one is. I was it was a settled will of the Scottish people until the EU referendum results came out.
I’m not sure about a certain criteria to be met for a referendum because of a referendum was in favour of the status quo was say 59.9% it could potentially cause problems. If it was a slim majority like 2016 EU referendum they should be a second referendum after negotiations are done to make sure people are happy with what is being proposed.

In my opinion, the entire world's nuclear arsenal needs to be taken down. No government should hold the power to destroy and irradiate the entire planet.

I learned recently that Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UFOs) have exhibited the ability to control our nuclear arsenal, at will. There are records from nuclear installations all around the world, leading back as far as World War II, which imply that UAPs can both activate and deactivate our weapons :nooo:

Imagine if who/whatever is the cause of UAP/UFO activity had ill intent? We wouldn't even have a chance to save ourselves.
