It's not meant to be a historical record, it's an artistic interpretation of the era. I think people are far too stiff with things like this. If the director wants to cast a POC, it's their art, let them. If someone created a movie taking place in renaissance Europe just as an artistic expression, I would be happy about POC queen. But when you take historic character that existed and everybody knows how she looks like and you portray her completely different and it doesn't make sense, you can't blame people not liking it. cookmyeggs 173
As someone who has a huge interest in Anne Boleyn and her story, I can't wait to see this. Anne Boleyn had a strong personality and a very singular life and that's what I'm hoping to see represented accurately, not necessarily the color of her skin
Killa 15,802
how tired are we? I can already feel the poor script with unimaginative, thought on the spot scenes trying to portrait the 16th to our liking. Why even bother See theres nothing wrong with this, Anna Boleyn is a queen from way too many centuries ago, no one would even bother search for a similar face for example, she's just like a fantasy character as lady of the lake at this point. Our collective minds also will play us tricks cause we first view these people from an romantic view and then from old movies. So you can do what you want, really It's just that this is done for controversy and it's so untasteful
Lemondeduerl 3,239
I know a lot of white actors played poc characters and nobody has said a word but I think this is unnecessary. If you want to be inclusive create new characters and new stories instead of a remake "but now with women" or a historic movie "but now with poc". :)
Karen Smith 10,026
I would like a historical film to be based on facts. I think it's worth showing the story as it was. And since the creators want to recreate the characters as well, white characters should be white and black ones should be black, right? For historical credibility, and only for that. Chic 20,830
Unless the character being played by a woman of color contradicted something about the character’s involvement in the story, I don’t really see a problem
Andy McQueen 4,484
Postmodern identity politics are striking again, sigh... I don't mind it with "Come Away" (2020), "The Witches" (2020), even though neither of those movies were good in my opinion, unfortunately -- or "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" (1997) with Brandy for example, which I love even though it doesn't make any sense at all (white king, black queen, asian prince) since these are all fictional stories and they want to give a message of inclusiveness and diversity. Also the live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" will now have a black Ariel which I don't mind at all. With historical figures, it's difficult. It is just as wrong that someone like Liz Taylor got to play "Cleopatra" but at the same time I don't see what a black actress as a Queen of England in the past century gives a message away? "Color-Blindness" or what is the message? Colonialism was real, so this feels like some sort of revisionism to me tbh. On the other hand, whitewashing and blackfacing as well as yellow-face were a thing for such a long time in regards of structural racism that mabye it's just natural that postmodernity Zeitgeist goes this way... Also, actors and actresses should be allowed to play anything, in my opinion. The outrage about cispeople playing transpeople or gay men playing straight men or vice versa, I never got it. That's why it's called acting. I wish Hollywood would focus more on working class issues, but never expect genuine critique on systems like patriarchy and capitalism of industries who benefit immensely from both. Again, it's not a documentary. Movies, Shows, Video games, they all have historical elements that they bend and take artistic liberty with. Whether it's time-bending movies about going back in time to stop something from happening or shows like The Crown adjusting reality for a more dramatic show, it's entertainment, not a history lesson. You don't have to like it, doesn't mean you have to be obtuse about it. I can't be free if my hands are tied... 🧟♀️👰🏻

gag 22,449
"People shouldn't be casted based on race, the best actress for the job should be casted" > The best actress for the job, who happens to be a Black woman, gets casted "This is forced diversity" Of course it would be preferable for more Black stories to be told, but as long as Black movies continue to be underproduced, underfunded, and under-promoted, this doesn't seem like a huge deal. Bolkins 4,085
It literally doesn’t matter. The story of Anne Boleyn has been told so many times during history, the fact that she’s being portrayed by a black woman this time around has no impact on the historical account. It’s not like we’ll be teaching in schools that she was black from now on why do people care? Not the bore worms!
