I'm sure she's right but that doesn't explain all the osbcure nominations no one has heard of this year, those definitely aren't going to help the academy make millions

It’s that mix of having popular music and obscure artists to seem like they are only focused on the music and not just on popularity.

did they not think that The Weeknd would have been one of the best choices for them to make money though?

But...she's right.

How the public sees whistleblowers:

No noms/Grammys = bitter

Yes noms/Grammys = ungrateful

Award shows love when the public gets judgey like this bc the complaint at the center gets forgotten and they get a pass. They win: Artists are discouraged from opening their mouths and The Grammys get to keep doing what they're doing.

The Weekend spoke up and everyone agreed he's not bitter or ungrateful --he's right. If more and more big names speak out like this, we may be seeing the Grammys finally getting their #OscarsSoWhite #MeToo level reckoning.

I mean ariana complained too and then she won one and was nominated for like 6 the next year... and so did Drake dont think there is a „blacklist“ but it is very true that it is about behind the scenes politics as much as it is the quality of your music.

Ariana and Drake weren’t “blacklisted” because their criticism gained support and they are insanely big and popular, so the nominations afterwards were more of a “shut them up” move. Still political. And I can totally see this happening to The Weekend after this. But for smaller artists like Halsey, they are far easier to just be blacklisted without much notice.

So? They believe they deserve one, what's the problem?

And artists who have gotten them before but speak out when they feel snubbed in almost all instances look “ungrateful”, speaking out in such situations always looks bad. And when you look bad, it’s easier for every other snub you get further on to go unnoticed.

That’s why it doesn’t change and such Award Shows allow themselves to corruption and favoritism.

REALITY

I think Abel's situation is different than most. Usually if I saw an artist complaining about not getting a grammy, I'd be like, "Well, they're just bitter about it," but because Abel's album and songs were objectively some of the biggest of the year, it's hard to just ignore the fact that he didn't get nominated for a single category.

That said, when people like Bieber complain about Changes being nominated in the wrong category (even though he has four nominations this year) and when Halsey just inserts her own album like "Oh, btw, Manic deserved better too," to me, it's just sort of icky.

Also though, after everyone here has been so anti-Grammys this year, y'all better not scream "YAAAASSS GAGA! OH MY GOD!" the next time she releases an album/song that gets nominated. Cause here's the problem: y'all keep trying to push this narrative that the Grammys are corrupt (which they are, to an extent), but as soon as Gaga gets nominated or performs at the Grammys, y'all ~coincidentally~ just forget about all the sh*t you've been talking about. Y'all at least need to be consistent with the messaging. Cause the Grammys aren't gonna change anything unless y'all actually make it a point to boycott them or whatever. Cause so far, it's all talk and no show.

Exactly! If she got nominations she’d be silent and suddenly everything would be right.

You know her personally enough to form this opinion? Nice

Her seeking those validations and saying her album deserved to be there is a clear answer. You don't need to know someone to be able to see how their reactions are coming from a place of bitterness and not actual wokeness.

Well, who was in the room fighting him?

Everything Halsey said happens in every single industry awards show.

How much did his label "grease palms" in his name bts? Did he sufficiently "kiss the ring" in the past? Did conflicting interests attached to other artists/labels success push him out? Did voters simply not personally care for him as an artist or individual (bias)?

Do not underestimate the pettiness of these people.

Spoiler

A recent example. An Oscar voter blatantly insinuated that Bradley Cooper not attending a QandA would influence their vote somehow. An awards reporter basically said they (the old white male majority voting academy) chide at good-looking actors succeeding in another lane. Like a "don't you have enough?" attitude. BC not getting the directors nom for ASIB was surprising but not shocking. He made great work but didn't play the bs game.

The Weeknd is performing at the Super Bowl and probably isn't allowed to perform anywhere before this show so he wouldn't perform at the Grammys
