I'm very familiar with the fact that technically the big social media companies have full say as to what is on their platforms and have full control over the content. However, considering how many Americans (has reached a majority of americans per a study I've read) who say they consume either some or most of their news on those social media platforms, I am vehemently opposed to the idea that the companies should be able to police what is on the platform, decide what is true or not, etc. I'm not asking you to agree with me on this but all I am saying is that I disagree with it regardless of what the law says in section 230 of the communications act. And the reason that I believe the way that I do is that when a private citizen can control what people consume as their source of news you are very nearly reaching state controlled media and propaganda. It's a very slippery slope and that is a reason why big tech has been in the news a lot, why the supreme court will be important to that as well as congress as we move forward. To be clear: I am not advocating for hate speech to be platformed for example but I do think that there should be more concrete bounds as to what should or should not be censored. Trump needs a large margin from Phoenix (a blue city) in tonight’s drop if he has any chance and he’s already not getting the margin he needs in AZ from red counties. PAs votes still largely remain in Philly and Pittsburgh while NV votes remain in Vegas. It’s not gonna happen. That's honestly a slippery slope though, giving these companies the ability to outright ban people based on their own standards and opinions. Lies, misleading posts, calls for violence and the like should all be flagged as such, yes, and suspend accounts for a specified time for repeated actions, but really thinking about this and considering it's been proven that social media companies are biased against antiestablishment opinions, views, and people, I don't really like the precedent that starts.
