Guest
As a french, thank you India for defending liberty of expression which includes blasphemy. Definition of blasphemy: the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk. Many countries are boycotting french products because of Macron's latest speech about defending caricatures and drawings in France. These countries include Qatar, Turkey, Kuwait... If we don't stand against radical islam we will fall into very dangerous territories (territory as a metaphor). As someone who comes from a muslim family but is not religious and rejects religion, I understand that blasphemy can offend those who are part of the religion but it is the criticism and satire/mockery of the ideology and belief which can as a result of course, it's logical, offend those who are part of the religion. I've seen many who says that it should be forbidden to 'disrespect religions', I politely disagree, because a religion is an idea and not a person, and it should be criticized and talked about the way people want to talk about it. The distinction between hate speech and blasphemy is something many people cannot do and I find it baffling and dangerous that so many have this thought process... Radical Islam is not a problem that exists only in France, and it should be pointed at, it should be aggressively rejected and punished in the society. Those who think it is a means to an end to target real muslims who are pacifists are wrong and are also dangerous to perpetuate the idea if you the government is against radical islam it is against moderate muslims. The same people who say "Stop generalizations". I'm very confused about that thought process as well. We need to come together and realize that the enemy is not religion but the extremists who ruin the reputation of people who practice their religion in peace. But if people don't even want to make the distinction, how are things going to get better? And I talk specifically for us french people, I feel completely shocked by the response of some muslims who of course do not condone the decapitation but are against blasphemy. Charli Hebdo has used blasphemy against christianism, judaism, buddhism and every other ideologies and yet no one said a thing. It should not be forbidden just because a part of a community felt offended, sounds harsh but this is the truth.
Esteban 2,300
I agree with everything but "blasphemy" is a religious term, so in a secular country the word blasphemy shouldn't even exists imo
lego 44,165
This is 3rd thread opened about this subject on GGD, but there’s zero about Arab Muslim women stabbed in Paris few days ago while attackers yelled “Dirty Arabs”. India has its own problems with crazy fundamentalists and nationalists, whether it’s mobs beating up people to death on the streets with impunity or raping young girls, it’s not exactly great on human rights. Queen Bitch 10,513
Beautiful. Anyone who doesn't stand with France at this time is cold and heartless. Samuel Paty died after teaching one of the most important values; freedom of expression. I hope the coward behind the murder rots in hell.
