Since some folks are tired of me pitting women against each other, I'll shake things up and keep it fair by pitting men against men this week. The fest starts now! :anveeroy:

Michael Jackson is better at everything

And he wasn’t homophobic so he’s got that too (assuming he didn’t do what he was accused of, obviously)

I can't name a single Prince song except Purple Rain and that's only because people covered it after he died. Also I always read that he was mean and rude so...

Michael Jackson was absolutely not a better writer or musician than Prince was.

He was fantastic and incredibly talented of course and made many classic songs and records. But the only thing he was truly better at than Prince was dancing.

OT: I don’t think you can really boil down Prince to being a pop star.

He was a multi instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and genuine virtuoso who delved into and excelled in a variety of extremely different genres.

He never really behaved like a pop star or presented himself like one. If anything, he was more of a counterpart to David Bowie (enigmatic, experimental, boundary pushing) than he was a peer of Michael Jackson despite how the media tried to play them off each other for no other reason than they were two successful black musicians.

Prince was unquestionably a better pound for pound musician. He can and did play pretty much anything he wanted. He was one of the single most gifted musicians to ever live, really. His guitar playing in particular is cited alongside true greats of rock n roll as some of the best and most innovative ever.

Michael’s domain was performing and while Prince was an electric performer, I would give Michael the win there. But in the studio? Michael made capital C classics but I can’t think of any album of his that I would call better than 1999, Purple Rain, or Sign o the Times.

Both were incredible performers and artists. Michael’s music was more accessible for people and Prince was more on the avant-garde side

Prince isn't even a popstar. He's a one-man show musician, studio engineer, record producer, and instrumentalists. Every single instrument you hear on a Prince record was played by Prince.

Michael was truly the first and greatest modern male popstar. He invented all the components of a great modern popstar and that doesn't include playing any instruments or engineering your records. Just like Madonna was for females, she invented showing your tits & pu**y on stage, that's why all great female popstars do that now.

Gaga does this too but we still boil her down to it. Anyways Michael is better.

Despite his obvious skill and talent, Prince always came off as a huge arrogant prick with his head in the clouds... of Jupiter. Not that Michael wasn't living on his own planet mentally, but he came off as more likeable and relatable considering what kind of life he lived. Apart from that, I never really followed any of their music or performances, so I can only base my decision on one thing: Michael was everywhere even during my childhood. Prince, sure, every now and then, but Michael Jackson? He was omnipresent at times. Now we know exposure and fame alone don't make a Popstars automatically good (Taylor Swift for example, who is so bad she wouldn't have made it out of that crusty old Pine Ridge Farm down south-east of Pennsylvania if skill level determined the amount of fame), but since both Prince and Michael are / were masters of their craft, I think it's fair to judge them on that. So MJ takes the cake :golfclap:
