For those who think this is unnecessary, may I remind you that more white people have won Oscars for portraying Asian people than actual Asian people have won acting Oscars.

SJWism will be the death of entertainment

You insinuate POC can’t be talented or be creative. What a foolish thing to say.

This is a good start. Now, it forces those who make movies to cast people who aren't just white like they mostly have before.

It gives people who aren't white an opportunity FINALLY to be on screen, play a significant role, or be a part of the movie making process.

Then we have some y'all in here who evidently think only white people have talent for movie making, with the insane assumption that Hollywood considered actors of all races to see who was the most talented and base casting off that.

We all know that's not how it happens. The white supremacy jumped out :awkney:

I just hope they don't start shoehorning in poorly written characters of color to meet this metric. The actors deserve better than that.

More people of color need to be included in the actual creation of film and tv, imo. That way we can get realistic AND compelling characters, not just "well this is a guy and he's black. That's his arc." Like they've been doing for a long time with black and gay characters.

Write them like Alien wrote their female lead :gayhat: Ripley was a badass character in a well written plot (even in the sequel, Aliens) and just so happened to be female. She wasn't a "strong woman" she was just "strong" and a woman. It brought female representation to the horror and action genres without feeling forced.

I hope my rambling makes sense :rip:

Yes it makes total sense and I couldn't agree more. They need to put actual effort into this rather than just use it to meet the "standards" set.

Also, I definitely concur that more POC need to be given the opportunity to actually create films and be involved in the whole process so to make the stories and characters authentic and rooted in the experiences of POC rather than those that just fit molds and stereotypes.

SJWism has taught me how hard people will fight for the ability to openly be an a-hole. Truly amazing.

Yea, they really tried, but it wasnt enough, because the "diverse" characters were episodic. The movie also didnt have any political message.

They actually tried to push it as a movie about mental health, in order to have the right message. It isnt enough to make a good movie now.

A star is born was a remake it doesnt need a political message the oscars should be won for your talent not a political message

I feel like a majority of people in this thread aren't really understanding the eligibility criteria.

I don't think the changes are bad. They're honestly pretty tame and many movies don't even try for Best Picture

I'm sorry but rules like these NEED to exists in the US. People in Europe will not understand the LEVEL and depth of racism in the US and how much it impacts even art in America. Since there are so many systemic obstacles blocking black artists from prospering (especially in film) then there needs to be systemic rules like these to help counter some of those racist obstacles. It absolutely necessarily needs to exist.

Some of you guys in this thread clearly didn't even look at the standards and changes. A film only has to meet 2/4 of the criteria and 1 of them is practically a given. Honestly this is probably just the Oscars way of getting people off their backs about the Oscars So White controversy. Almost all of the best picture nominees from the last decade would still be eligible. These rules are more symbolic than anything.

Wait so do PoC dominated movies like Moonlight need to add in white actors to make it look 'diversified'? I can see how this will backfire spectacularly

No

only at least 30% have to be POC or underrepresented

which means you can have 100% poc

:awkney:

No, a movie could have 0 POC or all POC and still qualify based on the distribution company having employees in prominent positions at these companies or if the distribution company has training initiatives for underrepresented groups.
