This is one of their pledges should they be elected at the next General Election.

But have said it wont apply to young people estranged from their families.

Leaving some families with no other options but to turn their kids out onto the streets to allow the system to step in and support them.

At least I know my job in the youth sector is safe in the tories win.

Forcing young gay kids to stay at home with their homophobic families and go mad or choose homelessness. What kind of ridiculous policy is this. 16/17/18 are some of the most vulnerable years of your life.

Its just a totally unserious policy.

Like they also announced that their would be a seperate job seekers benefit for under 25s where they would be forced to attend the job centre every day. And after 6 months, if they were still unemployed it would be taken away from them.

Meanwhile, they've got zero announced policies about how they would get young people into work.

We're at the lowest job vacancy stats in 5 years at just over 700,000.

We've got 1.78 million unemployed seeking work.

And we have 9.12 million not in work and not seeking work.

Its just ludicrous.

Natalia Kills

I see the tough love logic in trying to force young people to push for work.

There’s a lot more issues with confidence, resilience, initiative due to Covid and tech holding school leavers back.

But, I don’t agree with the idea. It’s far harder to find jobs now, especially at entry level.

I only see this working if they really incentivized businesses to hire young people and funded additional career support for young people, which won’t happen with AI.

Won't deny there's a real resilience issue with young people at the moment. Its the main thing the youth charity sector in the UK is trying to combat.

But the problem is - government's consistently cut funding from things that help young people build resilience and get them into work.

We used to run creative wellbeing sessions for young people. There was no waiting list. No need for formal medical diagnosis etc. Just needed to feel like you'd benefit from having a social support group to attend that ran creative sessions linked to art or music etc.

First thing the local council who funded it did after the 2024 budget cuts by Westminster? Cut all funding to it because it wasn't a legally required service for them to provide.

30 young people had that support ripped away from them with 1 weeks notice.

We ran an employability course last summer. It offered paid work experience placements to young people with various employers across the country. Funded by the government. 20 hours a week for 5 weeks that wouldn't count towards means tested payments from universal credit. It was explicitly for NEET young people who were either care leavers or had been involved with the police as teens.

First week in went great.

Second week in. The local job centre & DWP in our region erroneously cut their universal credit and housing benefit (a big ****ing deal for care leavers!). And wouldn't repay them what was owed for another month once they accepted they had ****ed up.

Multiple young people dropped out because they were afraid of further ****s up ripping the rug out from under them.

Burnham seems to be the only PM in my professional career who actually is listening to professionals telling him what's needed. Just hope it actually works or we end up with boomerlists again.

DopeEnigma

It doesn’t matter, they are a long long way hopefully never near power again after the absolute disaster and disgrace of the last 14 years they were in.

The funny thing is, it will most likely be a smaller amount than adult job seekers, which is already not that much money per month. Which means if they have to go to a job centre EVERY DAY that’s at least £5 minimum per day if you have to travel by bus (presuming only one bus two ways) so that’s about £150 a month on bus tickets.

Which is probably almost, if not, all the money they’ll receive anyway. And jobs are asking more and more for more flexibility in your schedule and somehow a lot of qualifications even for simple jobs. Last I checked, not a single job requires less than 7 days of availability per week.

Last year when I was part time I wanted to take on a second job in retail, and even if the weekly hours were just 12–every shop still required you to be fully flexible in your schedule.

It’s an unemployment welfare payment, you usually have conditions that need to be met as well to be eligible.
