This is NOT blackface, it's summer goals. This shoot was made when Jersey Shore was blowing up. Everyone was spoofing something from the show. This photoshoot was a sendup of the extreme tanning they were popularizing. Also something teen Gaga did herself as a NY/NJ Italian-American of the aughts, just like the Jersey Shore cast. The way people are all about face masks now, are how they were with fake tanning/bronzing then. Outside of the tan, what exactly makes this a caricature of Black people? If anything, it's an overlapping self-referential pop culture spoof = TanGa Also, it was V Magazine & the photo people always use to argue about it is darkened a teeny bit in photoshop (she has a crazy dark tan in the original photos, but it wasn't that dark). People are living in la la land if they think a popular national magazine in the US (unfortunately...it has happened in some countries with a small population of Black people) with a broad readership would slap an artist in Blackface on their cover. Gaga—and other big artists ranging from Katy to Rihanna—have absolutely been guilty of cultural appropriation to some degree in the past. But the V Magazine thing was always nuts imo. I do wonder if it's an age thing...like some people just aren't aware that in 2007-2013 it was very common for white girls to have deep tans (and Gaga's half Sicilian so she probably tans easily, too). As you pointed out, too, the V thing was mocking the whole Jersey shore tan designer clothes 80s mafia wife meets "Tan Mom" (the babies on here need to Google tan mom) look that was popular at the time. The reach of this accusation if that's their only evidence Here's an excercise, and you can do this with anything seen as racist or racially offensive: Imagine the opposite. Say I really like Irish culture. I'm Black. Wearing green on St. Paddy's Day and loving Gaelic football, is one thing. Dyeing my hair bright orange, donning fake freckles, putting on a brogue, doing birdies down the street and being about that cable knit life, is a totally different story. Not unlike, a white person wearing dreads/cornrows, sporting grills, acquiring a blaccent, and being about that Timbs life. Now are there people that grow up in these cultures and it's all they know? Of course! But Eminem--Justin Bieber is not. You can't play house with peoples cultures. "She's an intellectual, your honor"

I'm confused He says it himself, so I'm not sure what you're confused about. I'm just saying people are "inspired" by black culture other people call it appropriation. But the only reason I gave this example was because of the whole Rita Ora thing. People just thought she was mixed because of the way she sings and dresses, so there is a clap back online, even though she has always said she is Albanian. They are saying she is black fishing because they didn't know she was white. It's not her fault they didn't take the time to look up the information. But how can they be mad at one white person who is inspired by black culture and not another. Also Rita has done like two RnB songs that are her own and even those songs were skewed toward pop. Everything else has been straight pop dance music. She's not even trying to be an RnB influenced artist and yet she is still getting clap back online. Anyways, I know this subject gets many different POV's so I'm not trying to argue with anyone about it. If you don't think Justin has not benefited off black culture that's fine. Well Im kinda confused because Justin started out with pop music and an audience made out of highest percentage of girls, to then young women, his songs evolved into dance, electropop per say with Skrillex and whatnot and he did make a 100% rnb album with Journals in around 2014. The way he dresses looks like a mix of being inspired by Skater culture and hip hop, but does that mean he has "profited off black culture". I'm not so sure what that means, just because he's white and he likes rnb, pop, dance music does that mean he has to apologize to african-americans for liking it? The issue is that white peoples take from black people and black people continue to be dragged for it while white people are praised for it. That will never change. And it doesn’t help black people one bit because if someone’s a racist they’re going to be a racist and they’re never going to see black people as an equal so no, white people are not "normalizing" anything by doing this. At least there will be a precedent that people can use to defend themselves. Being gay, you can sometimes reason with people by showing them examples of similarities in heterosexual people (PDAs, gender expression, etc). Sure, I don't need their approval to live my normal life, but if their collective opinion ends up turning into actual policies, or threatening my life, then I sure am gonna care what they think. The example of kids in school was given because if a white kid has a "black hairdo", then they can't complain about a black kid having it. And if they do, the black kid can at least defend themselves by comparing. It's awful that that is the way to reach these people's minds, and sure, they will probably still be racist after, but at least their personal racism won't actually affect other people's lives so much, because they won't have "acceptable" arguments when presented with this dilemma. You're thinking rationally. Systemic racism isn't rational, it's oppressive. it doesn't matter if a white person and POC person are doing the same thing. The system is meant to always lean favorably toward whites. More often than not: Black hair, Black speech, Black clothes, are always an issue when it's attached to a black person; whereas a white person gets a broad pass. It's impermanent for them. So it's "novel" or "cool", while POC get fired, not hired, suspended, humiliated for the same thing. "She's an intellectual, your honor"
