People defending this, please know he's not ancient. It was just a few decades ago and he explicitly said, "I believe in white supremacy."
He is not someone we should be glorifying.

Even if our fave has a song with his name.

"we can’t all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

--John Wayne

He also said (of Native Americans) that it was a matter of survival for white men and that "Indians were selfishly trying to keep the land for themselves" :huntyga:

Let's be real, a majority of white people are racist, so honestly all this canceling of dead people is pointless, let's focus on people who are alive and are continuing to perpetuate racism actively right now.

Good point.

Spoiler

obviously kidding

OT: but seriously, not the song, but John Wayne as a person is not great. Defending him is not a good look. See quote in previous post.

I agree that it is much more important to focus on the living racism right now.

However by "a majority of white people are racist" do you mean that you think that the majority of white people today are racists?

I should clarify, I'm talking about america.

A majority of white people in america voted for Donald Trump, so yes.

Not all whites are racist, but a majority are. I'm not buying the "not all trump voters are racist". If a person votes for someone who actively refuses to say something as inoffensive as "black lives matter", demonizes brown people as "bad hombres", then yes they are racist.

John Wayne is like a male version of the name Joanne though. She can always use that logic to defend the song title. :huntyga:

It's the same thing with confederate monuments though. Why glorify someone who has such extremely racist views?

It's one thing to value their art. Do we need to give them honorary accolades? How do you think poc feel when someone who says "I believe in white supremacy" gets an airport named after them?

John Wayne and racism is not synonymous in the public conscience otherwise why would Gaga write practically a love letter to him only 4 years ago?

What's off putting with this whole resurfacing of racist comments from dead people is that it's completely pointless when we should be focusing on today's racism. It's not done as a time capsule but more as witch hunting.

And yes the strange desire to somewhat demote a dead icon seem counterproductive when they aren't even known for their racism in the first place.

Kind regards

He will still be a dead icon, but if so many people are offended by his racist comments, nothing is wrong changing the name. His legacy or whatever will be still there, just for the ones who wanna enjoy it
