Orange County Dems call for John Wayne Airport renaming

Title:

At the heart of the latest drive is a widely discussed 1971 Playboy Interview in which Wayne makes bigoted statements against Blacks, Native Americans and the LGBTQ community.

He infamously said, “I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.”

He later said that although he didn’t condone slavery, “I don’t feel guilty about the fact that five or 10 generations ago these people were slaves.”

He also felt no remorse in the subjugation of Native Americans.

“I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them. … [O]ur so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival,” he said. “There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.”

He also considered movies such as “Easy Rider” and “Midnight Cowboy” perverted, and used a gay slur to refer to the two main characters of the latter film.

Are we on the verge of another track removal?

She better not. John Wayne is such a great song. Arrgghh, this world has gone mad. What is next, remove 911 because some may think it refers to 9/11, remove Judas because it offends Christians, Dancin in the Circles because it is "dirty":stalkga:. Sick of this cancel culture and removal of history. Instead of removing history, why can't we acknowledge history happened, and use our energy to make the FUTURE better. Changing or hiding the past is pointless because it does nothing to promote change for the future.

I want to live in a world where we have equality, equal opportunity and we view each other as one instead of white or black, but removing history is not the way, having history will show where we when wrong and how we can improve. Removal of history will lead us to repeat history, where we don't have equality or rights or the ability to see everyone as one.

PS. Sorry for long post.

I have to disagree. Statues, monuments etc are a way of paying tribute to show respect for people for whatever reason. I don’t feel that anyone with such hateful views should be commemorated anywhere for everyone to see. I don’t think it’s about erasing history or cancel culture at all and it’s still thought in school and on the internet for whoever is interested. It’s about getting rid of figures that represent years of slavery and injustice and the people that encouraged it. And John Wayne has obviously made his fair share of hateful statements about slavery, black people in general and the lgbtq community while he was alive and in the public eye.
