StrawberryBlond 14,819
The problem is all in the word "openly." The use of this word confuses everything. Why can't we just say the orientation without preceding it with this word? These awards were given out at a time when being LGBT was more accepted and understandable, so it's not like being closeted would have increased your chances. And it isn't really fair on those whose orientation changed over time, which can happen. Also remember that Sam didn't even come out until that album had sold a significant amount and they'd had a few hits. None of the songs on that album allude to being attracted to men, they're left completely open for the listener to interpret how they want. Many saw this as a deliberate cover-up of being gay so that the album would sell. So it feels kinda disingenuous to give the honour to someone who conveniently waited until the time was right to tell us of their identity, they also waited until they were approaching album #3 before coming out as non-binary and appearing more overtly flamboyant. Gaga was out and proud being bi and speaking about gay rights from day one and I respect the hell out of her for that. How the Grammys missed this is anyone's guess. I mean, he was openly gay in Your Song and I'm sure he has won several Grammys after that song (at least 1 for Lion King)

He came out as Bi in 1976 (gay later) and won all his Grammys after that though!

Where did anyone call you names? What is the genuine question you were asking? You clearly knew they preferred "they" as a pronoun and then referred to them not only as "he" repeatedly, but even said "a they". Who says "a" to address another person? chaeri pls

Is Sam Smith still gay if she calls herself “they” now? I’m A man. My mom is A woman. I’m not sure how to address Sam, so I called her A they’re. What do I say when a person isn’t a man or a woman? innocent questions and I’m the one who gets called disrespectful. Tell me, because everyone says something different! That’s the point I’m making And Paula Abdul ain’t got [BLEEP] on me!

androiduser 7,438
Madonna won the award too, but has she ever come out as bisexual, openly? She has dated women openly, but not sure if she identifies as bisexual?

Tell me, because everyone says something different! That’s the point I’m making First of all, "disrespectful" is not an insult or a slur. It's an adjective that describes words. And you're not words, so when I say "this is disrespectful" that's addressed to what you said, not you. And that came off as disrespectful because it didn't look like you were asking a genuine question, and on Gagadaily many people have been trying to make fun of Sam and discredit his gender expression so you can't blame me for thinking that someone calling Sam "a they're" is purposely disrespectful. Glad it's (apparently) not. To answer your question, Sam is non-binary. That means Sam doesn't feel like they are only a man or only a woman. "Binary" means a system of two things (i.e. man/woman, black/white, dead/alive), and "non-binary" means that Sam doesn't feel like they belong to either part of the system (not a man or a woman). It's nothing scary or out of this world. They just prefer to be addressed as "they" so that they don't have to be confined into being either a man or a woman. You can't say "a they're" because it's grammatically incorrect. They're="they are" so by that logic you would be calling yourself "a he's" and your mom "a she's". But you use man and woman, so for Sam it's "non-binary". chaeri pls

Wouldn’t calling that person “non-gendered” be more appropriate if you’re trying to establish the idea that there’s more than two? And Paula Abdul ain’t got [BLEEP] on me!
