While many employees are put on furlough (and they should be), many are not, instead being put on a temporary layoff (but not furloughed) so the company doesnt have to pay insurance past the end of that month. I know several family members whos job did this to them, including my own.

Thats a staggering amount of people who have affordable health care... https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2019/demo/p60-267.html It’s so cute that you think having insurance means you can afford healthcare in the US. Exactly, I'm currently thousands in debt because of a single hospital visit last year that lasted 4 hours and thats with insurance (I was charged hundreds for 2 bags of IV fluid that literally costs less than a dollar to manufacture). It's sad how actually getting insurance is only half the fight.
Fresco 1,688
Something like medicare for all has a cost advantage over our current system of many different health insurance companies. Obamacare capped the profit margin on insurance companies to 20%. Medicare has a 0% profit margin, because it is a government program without profit motive. Be wary of putting our healthcare in the hands of the government. Too many people have a huge monetary interest in the way things work now. Republicans will always try to deregulate, fire the inspector general watchdogs, prevent enough people from being hired to do the work properly, and demand the work be contracted out to for-profit companies. Republicans often break the government to make it not work properly so the people willingly ask things to be done by for-profit companies.

That is exactly what happens, conservatives are consistently dismantling and defunding healthcare systems to push people towards private, for-profit healthcare. It isnt happening just in the US but other countries like the UK.

They qualify for Medicaid or have signed up for the ACA, which will cost next to nothing since they are out of work.

The average American has $175k in savings as of June 2018. It shouldn't be a "select few" if the majority of Americans are finically literate. No way! The average American has very little in savings. Fifty per cent of Americans don’t have a savings account or have no money in their savings. Another twenty per cent has just the bare minimum to keep the account open, and less than $1,000 dollars in savings. That’s seventy per cent of average Americans that don’t have anything close to $175,000.

They are not counting anyone who dies at home and they aren't counting people who died because of a pre-existing condition that turned fatal because of the virus. You are uninformed? In some states, they are counting even people who arent detected with covid as covid victims.
Gimme More 35,802
i'm just thankful for living in the UK and that everyone has access to free healthcare whether they are employed or not i hope the US adopts a similar system, i'm not saying ours is the best but I find it insane that people have to pay insane amounts of money to get help/stay alive when this isn't the case in many other countries. The discussion completely free health care or half/half etc. is another discussion, but it's clear that the system in the USA doesn't work and only benefits the very rich.
