well, i don't think she could say anything too different, but it is a bit of a fetch. she probably sees him as a superstar for helping her with the event, not for supporting China. i think she wants to focus on the real issue instead of pointing fingers. i question her views at times, but she's entitled to her own ideas.

edit: ack i mixed up a few words ahahhaha early mornings

Well I think she is a bit ignorant about all the taiwan-china issues, I don't think that she believes that Taiwan is part of China. I guess that she just wanted to thank everyone who has participated in the show.

yes it is. just because a state isn't recognized by most of the United Nations doesn't mean it isn't a valid independent nation.

Mainland China (People's Republic of China) claims Taiwan (Republic of China) as part of their territory despite the fact that Taiwan operates as an independent nation.

Same situation as Kosovo operating as an independent nation while Serbia claims it's territory as it's own. Or Abkhazia operating as independent while Georgia claims it's territory. Or Transnistria, where Moldova claims it's territory. It's the same situation.

By definition, as long as a state follows the guidelines of the Geneva Convention, it is by definition an independent nation, regardless if the UN or the rest of the world sees it as such.

Gaga isn't exactly politically savvy, and she seems to have very surface level understanding of international politics. But she and every other freaking celebrity.

It’s just the leaders in China that’s messing. Taiwan deserves to be on its own

I think if China weren’t a dictatorship it would’ve been acknowledged a long time ago....

I'm from Hong Kong and I love Gaga, but I cannot support Gaga praising Tedros. For the past few months WHO has been dodging Taiwan's contacts, but Taiwan turns out to be one of the best countries to defend the coronavirus. I know people have been debating whether Taiwan is a country or not, in my opinion Taiwan is an independent country, It has its own government, a complete political system, its own currency, military force, diplomacy, etc. Foreign countries cannot say Taiwan is a country just because they need economical exchange with China, which China 'claims; Taiwan is a part of it, but the CCP never controlled Taiwan.
I'll leave the Taiwan debate to you guys, but WHO as a world organization, it has the responsibility to share health and hygiene information with every piece of land in the world. If WHO doesn't recognize Taiwan as an independent country, then allow Taiwan to be an observer to join the assembly (Observers do not have to be a country). But instead WHO is ignoring every offer from Taiwan, and refusing to share health information with Taiwan. Recently a Hong Kong media interviewed one of the Assistant Directors-General of WHO (Bruce Aylward) about Taiwan's membership, and Aylward simply cut off the camera and refuse to say anything about Taiwan.
I know WHO is supposed to be a neutral organization about world hygiene issues, but witnessing all these events have caused Taiwanese and Hong Kongers lost their trusts in WHO. WHO also frequently praises China for nothing, when China is obviously handing out false data and information about the Coronavirus. The outbreak of Coronavirus is definitely China and WHO to blame.

just another gay

I am sure she didn't mean it THAT much by "praising Tedros", we know our girl like to exaggerate....

I think many people in the US (in Western in general) are not aware of WHO's failure and their staggering position throughout this whole time (which is FACT), plus the loathing of Trump pushing people to trust / take side with WHO more...

After all, she still did the whole thing wholeheartedly for the best cause. It is a bit insensitive, but I wonder if any other celebrities would know better...
