Bill-9 (An Act to increase Québec’s socio-economic prosperity and adequately meet labour market needs through successful immigrant integration) came into effect Jan. 1, 2020, and will include questions about secularism, same-sex marriage, gender rights, religious symbols and other aspects of Quebec culture (the bill in full is included at the bottom of this article). Refugees and those coming to the province via family reunification programs are exempt from the test because they are under federal jurisdiction. The reform bill was sponsored by CAQ Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette and voted into law in June after a 19-hour session in the National Assembly. The test must be taken within a two-year period before the candidate can apply for permanent immigration. The test has 20 multiple choice and true or false questions, and requires that anyone who wants to live in Quebec prove they have proficient knowledge of the province’s values. Prospective immigrants will have 90 minutes to complete the exam. To pass, test takers must score at least 75 per cent. [...] "
OBEY 57,109
"Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette refused to make public the wording of the actual test questions because he said that would amount to giving out the information in advance. But he released five sample questions out of a potential pool of 100 at his news conference to give people an idea. A candidate will be asked a total of 20 multiple choice questions on the actual test. Here they are: 1. In Quebec, women and men have the same rights and this is inscribed in law. True. False. 2. Choose the illustration or illustrations that indicate who is allowed to marry in Quebec The illustrations depict: Two men Two women and one man Two women A man and a woman Two men and one woman 3. Identify which situations involved discrimination. A job refused: To a pregnant woman To a person lacking the required diploma To a person because of their ethnic background 4. Since March 27, 2019 by virtue of the secularism of state law, all new police officers may not wear religious symbols. True. False. 5. What is the official language of Quebec? French Spanish English French and English" Text copied and pasted from : https://montrealgazette.com/news/quebec/here-are-five-sample-questions-from-quebecs-values-test
OBEY 57,109
@Economy This news was quite controversial when CAQ announced this idea but since the test came into effect is it me or nobody talks about it anymore ? Thoughts?

Sounds like something every progressive country should do Other provinces in Canada denounced it, like Quebec's secularism law (new teachers, judges, police officiers can't wear religious symbols), saying it is rooted in racism. Others were saying this test was a bit of a mess because some Quebecers themselves wouldn't even "pass" it.

Depends how far it's taken As long as people aren't hateful or problematic I believe ppl should have the right to have their own values and beliefs Saying someone is not worthy of being in a society because of this or that to me is Someone can pass the "values" test and still be a prick and sh*tty person overall... Other ppl may have a few beliefs that don't align with the test and be loving people or productive ppl I don't think a test like this will necessarily weed out good or bad people. Not to mention most people should have no issue faking a test. If anything you are weeding out people that at least are honest A nation can establish rules for who it lets in and you can't stop that, it's their right. But it doesn't mean I have to agree with it Quebec has often been more conservative than the rest of Canada with immigration and they are.missing out on a lot of the economic benefits Quebec still drains Canada of over $10 Billion a year in equalization payments because they consistently fail to perform at a comperable level I'm not SUPER against this cuz it does have a certain logic and arguments to make in favour of it too... But overall Im still inclined to say I don't support it

Bt1 5,213
I think it is easy to lie to a test like this one.

I think we can all agree with those values. it might not be the best policy choice in terms of its kind of dumb lol but the quebec province is surely legally able to impose such a test. If an immigrant shares those beliefs, they aren't worthy of being in a Canadian society imo

I agree with ! I just find it funny how it was such a "big deal" in the media but then the test indeed goes into effect and I didn't hear about it at all since last autumn

This is not a test to see if you're progressive or not. Obviously a non-progressive person is aware that gay people can get married. But it does however make sure they KNOW what they're getting into. I mean I'm sorry but you have no business getting into a country where you don't know two men can get married. That could be highly dangerous. TLDR: this test only makes sure people know the law, nothing to get worked up about. chaeri pls
