Warren’s Campaign Running Low On Cash

Elizabeth Warren’s campaign made the unusual move Friday of releasing her latest fundraising total ahead of next week’s deadline — admitting to supporters she’s coming up millions of dollars short in an effort to bring in more cash.

The Massachusetts senator has raised $17 million so far this quarter — leaving the presidential hopeful more than $7 million short of her $24.6 million third-quarter haul.

With the fourth quarter of 2019 serving as the final financial test of a candidate’s strength heading into the first caucuses and primaries — and with her polling flagging nationally and in the early states, Warren’s team is trying to turn her poor performance into a fundraising opportunity.

“Traditionally, campaigns wait until after the mandatory FEC reporting deadlines to announce how much they’ve raised. But this isn’t a traditional campaign,” her team said. “We’re a grassroots team, and you should know exactly where things stand right now — and exactly why it’s important that you give.”

Warren’s team has set a $20 million goal for the quarter — still short of her previous sum, which was the second-highest in the Democratic field.

“Now, we don’t have to match what we raised last quarter — and we probably won’t,” her campaign said. “But if the numbers don’t pick up, we run the risk of having to pull back plans to organize for Elizabeth Warren in all 50 states during the primary. And that plan is central to her path to victory.”

Warren isn’t the first candidate this cycle to use a fundraising shortfall to try to boost donations. U.S. Sen. Cory Booker’s campaign put out a plea for $1.7 million at the end of September to keep him in the race. Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro followed with an $800,000 ask of his own.

But Warren is the biggest-name candidate to open up about a low haul, as she attempts to retool a campaign battered over “Medicare for All” and under attack from moderates, primarily South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, whom her team subtly jabbed once more over his “wine cave” fundraiser in Friday’s email as well.

That's very sad. Warren has always had my support, and to an extent will continue to have my support, but at this point, this is really a Biden vs Sanders race. While she's pretty much consistently been #3, that's not enough.

Then stop wasting money and drop out by now she should know.  Same with the others who know they have no chance of winning. Why are you wasting peoples donations(and corporations for some  :poot:)

Imagine she drops out and immediately endorsed/starts campaigning for Bernie. His numbers would be insane. A dream.

I don't think she should drop out, though. Yeah, Warren 99% will not get the nomination, but she's consistently been polling 3rd behind Biden and Sanders. If she drops out, then literally everyone else should drop out too. I understand that this is largely a Biden vs Sanders race, but it's also not feasible for like 90% of the candidates to drop out.

Aw man :/

I guess she'll be the one to drop out then? And her support will go to Bernie, pushing him past Biden.

I hope she's Bernie's VP though. Then his health issues become way less worrisome (not that they're disqualifying anyway but still).

Whimsical bitch

If only she dropped and join Bernie as a VP, it would be a hard stop for this Biden nonsense and destroy trump

A 70+ ticket? Yeah no. Whoever the VP is will be a stark contrast to the POTUS nominee. Bernie would pick someone younger and of color

She is low on meeting her goal, but I don't know if having ~$20 million (plus reserves from last quarters...)  is actually *low on cash* or a cause for concern just yet.

The problem is that Warren's team wants to literally send her to all 50 states in order to build a grassroots base of support and to try to ensure some delegates everywhere she goes, even where she is not 1st or 2nd in voting  To my knowledge they use more of their money on that than advertising like Pete, Bloomberg, and Biden etc. have... I haven't been checking up very diligently on how the teams are using their money outside of Bernie though. Kamala spent her money terribly, and didn't have very effective organizing in California or the early states, which were her only chances of maybe squeaking out some kind of path to the nomination and where she had sunk all of her money in for comparison. Liz isn't at the point where she thinks she must win Iowa/NH to have a chance, she will probably come 3rd in both, maybe squeak out a second, but my guess is she's playing a war of attrition and will eventually throw her support to who she thinks will be the winner in exchange for influence in their administration (at least their staffing, like she did with Clinton)  if nothing miraculous happens to bring her back to top 2 in the next like, literally 1 month :emma:

When there are reports about Liz closing down shop in certain states, then we can talk about if she'll be dropping out soon. At this point, even if she doesn't make the $20 million, she may have to eventually narrow her focus to just a few states at a time and re-allocate her funding (or just try more aggressive methods... that being said if she renegs and starts taking PAC money either now or in the general, she's toast politically...)

This is why many leftists chuckled when the WFP endorsed Warren... She wants the ability to be a grassroots, structural change candidate, but she isn't attracting the right people (with the right dedication) to do so. Even since the purge of the Warren-Pete voters, her coalition isn't multi racial working class people, it's still to my knowledge upper middle class and wealthy liberals  They have the money, but not the passion, not the personal investment, and not the numbers to carry her to the nomination. Back in September it seemed like she was really going to expand that and win with it, but now I think she'll drop out sometime past Super Tuesday (and hopefully release what few delegates she has to Bernie)

It wouldn't be that insane; given the current polling averages, Sanders would be less than 6 points ahead of Biden if EVERY Warren supporter went to Sanders, which isn't exactly what would happen:

Evidently only about one-third of her supporters would go to Sanders; it would be higher if she enthusiastically endorsed him, but keep in mind she did NOT enthusiastically endorse him four years ago and we've been given no indication that she feels differently this time around. Why endorse someone for nothing, when you can withhold your endorsement and get all of the candidates to adapt your positions in order to GAIN your endorsement? (Which is what Hillary did in 2016.)

Tagging @rojo and @PartySick since they both voiced a similar sentiment.
