Dems CAVE To Trump On Defense Budget

USMCA is not just a win for Trump. There are a LOT of moderate Democrats who have been hearing from their constituents for the past year about how important it is that USMCA be ratified. If you're a Democrat representing a rural area--and many of the Frontline members who flipped Trump districts in 2018 are--then you know your constituents NEED international trade deals. I don't think Speaker Pelosi has any trouble sleeping at night or living with herself. Her party controls ONE of the three entities that must act in unison in order for anything to become law, but she's been able to wield her power effectively to get the President--who has proven he's 100% fine with government shutdowns--to sign several budgets that didn't include any of his priorities like new border wall funding. This latest development is indeed different, and I'm still waiting to see what exactly is in it for House Democrats, but keep in mind you don't want your party to be the one that held up passing the military authorization bill. That, too, is bad politics for the reason I mentioned in my first post. And that's a big part of why you aren't seeing controversial policy riders, like lifting the trans service ban or revoking previous AUMFs, in the bill. It is a must-pass bill.

The fact that both sides can claim that this was an obvious win for them, a complete capitulation to the otherside, etc. is not evidence that indeed everyone has won, but rather that party operatives have won politically at the expense of the majority of American people.

Now, obviously Democrats concessions tend to be about helping even some people at all as opposed to hurting them. The converse being that Republican concessions AND goals helping the wealthy.That article basically is about the fact that Trump didn't help that group of people as much as Republicans wanted him to. For all our hatred of him, he still is a faux anti-establishment candidate and a loose cannon. We can all agree that things like federal paid leave and increased pay is good on the surface, but part of that was actually due to Ivanka, which is concerning as hell, and part of it is also about saving face politically and not in a generous or sincere effort to improve the lives of as many people as possible. And as others have pointed out, both parties won in terms of the defense budget winning, because establishment democrats and the entire republican party minus like Ron Paul are pro-war parties. Establishment Dems are wary of ever really reducing the spending, even though they may say they want to, and its clear in their donors and their votes, not in their policies where it should be if they were serious about it. 

 It is really only the progressive wing of the party that is open and aggressive in demanding that we reduce and even reallocate the spending to more fruitful endeavors that will help the most people in our country. Hell, even Elizabeth Warren is shaky on this.
