Good vocalists?

I was wondering…

What (in your opinion) makes someone a good vocalist? I mean, what are the qualities that you need to be considered as a good singer? Especially for men, since men's biology often makes it harder for them to sing.

Someone that can hit 1 powerful note that hits you in the heart. That's my only true definition of a vocalist, if you can do that, you're set

And what do you think about the ability to tell a story? Like Gaga said, you can sing with perfect technique but still be an average singer because you can't tell a story… Do you think story-telling is part of being a vocalist, or is it an other quality?

A good vocalist in my eyes is someone who can convey a story in their voice, someone who can move you/make you think and listen to what they have to say, and be technically good as well... gotta have vibrato thats not forced and knows how to use the full dynamics of their vocals.

I think that's more in the song writing department 

But if you mean like if you sing in a way that can tell a story like picking out an amazing melody, yeah that's a great singer

Songwriting is part of artistry, not being a vocalist. Lady Gaga is an artist & amazing vocalist, Adele too. Bey is a vocalist but lacks in the artistry department...

I think that its also important than when a singer does a cover, that they make it their own rather than just trying to cover the song.

"Vocalist" is often used to design really good singers like the ones who have a lot of control over their voice and can do nearly what they want with it. And yes the story-telling is part of it imo!^^

Expressive voice, pitch perfect, power, large range, good tone, good dynamics, able to make effect lack playing with breathiness nasality, vibrato etc.  

It comes with work, the ability to be vulnerable, experimentation and good technique sweetaaaaaay.
