Ziggy 11,563
I love how concise it is and how much is crammed into such a short time frame. But the best bit imo is how relatively simple it is in presentation. It's essentially the same set shot and dressed in a few different ways which I think is only a benefit to the song. Plus, it truly encapsulates the song giving it a fitting visual that *adds* to the song and enhances the experience rather than just exists alongside it (like Telephone, which I love, it should be stated). ryansamonster 1,682
This video is so iconic and literally encapsulated what I thought the entire ARTPOP era was going to be. Oh, to have the Venus video....

Given that ARTPOP was about representation, in art, in pop culture, in media, she went back to the birth of modern visual representation and drew inspiration from silent film and classical theater, which was pretty brilliant. They hand-painted the black and white film stock like they did back in the early 1900s, which is why the color looks so splotchy. The iconic smeared make-up was originally a nod to pierrot, the clown (a character widely mocked by audiences, something she identified with at the time), before she made it her own: The harsh make-up was reminiscent of German expressionist filmmaking: The rotating head sequence and puffs of smoke were straight out of Georges Méliès' early science fiction work (and the image itself was directly from another silent film, a reference I can't find). The floating heads imitate the over-exposed close-ups often found in silent film: And these are just a few examples. The video is crammed full of references, some extremely obscure. EDIT: God, I finally found it. Leave it to Gaga to reference an obscure French film from 1908.
