I like the album as a whole, it's perfect to listen in the background while you're doing other stuff. But half the songs are quite forgettable, and it's Pharrel's fault in part, but also Ariana for going in this direction maybe too much:crossed:

A good producer knows to let an artist shine. He did not do this.

Ariana still has a mind of her own and can make decisions. If Ariana truly felt that way she had a choice to change something. It was her fault, not his.

Overall the album is OK for me, some songs really stand out though:

Goodnight n Go - best song on the album sans GIAW and NTLTC

Breathin

Everytime

Better Off

The only things I got out of Sweetner is that 1.) her tone is absolutely beautiful that she can make me tolerate very mediocre Amerie-like filler, and 2.) Breathin is good. Overall, it was eh. She's got a nice voice, but I'm just not interested in her as an artist despite many pop fans pushing her as the messiah and making me feel like I need to stan her.

the only problem I have with album is that it is so ****ing short. Like almost every single song has 5+ seconds of no music at the end, some even with 8 and one reaching 20.

I thought some user's comparisons to Hard Candy were rather apt to how Sweetener is being received. Pop girls. Pharrell will take over your record if you have him on a lot of songs.

I literally thought this when I was listening today!

I listened to it twice today. Really nothing stood out to me at all. The songs are too similar and are just not interesting. These flat choruses have got to go oh my god

Idk about you two but I felt like Hard Candy was more focused and ultimately... better...

River

Hard Candy

Sweet Escape

Sweetener

All had Pharrell as a producer/writer or the Neptunes and all of them suffers from the same problems..

And like, it's the 3rd time that he's using the candy/sweet theme.. move on..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Agreed. Hard Candy is an album that, despite it’s misgivings, at least had a clear vision. It may be overproduced or whatnot but it’s still a lot of fun - as any party album should be. The songs on Sweetener however seem so aimless.

Agree, HC might be overproduced but somehow it fits in everysong.

While I do agree Pharell was a bit overused in the album, Sweetener is still an immaculate album in my opinion.

I see it on the same level as Dangerous Woman - one of the best albums she's released, I'd say its much better than her first two albums. You have to remember there's a huge difference between her first three albums and Sweetener...and she even warned us about this before she's released it.

She has been doing mainstream pop music from Yours Truely all the way to Dangerous Woman, My Everything and DW were more commercially successful albums aimed towards mainstream music. Sweetener however is ditching her pop sound and going more towards R&B, so its definitely intended to be different to what fans are use to. Also with Pharell, Missy and Nicki as features this makes the R&B vibes bigger.

It's not a bad album, perhaps you just aren't much of an R&B person, R&B fans and hardcore Arianators may appreciate the sound a little more. Trust me, the more you give it a listen the more it'll grow on you - I'd say its def a grower album (Like Joanne). If you are here for the more pop hits, NTLTC, Breathin and Sweetener are probs the only three tracks on Sweetener that have the most pop vibe to it.

LOVE JUNKIE

I knew Pharrell wrote half the songs without even looking at the credits. He has such a distinct style to his vocal melodies and lyrics to the point where it just sounded like she was covering his songs at some points. And don't get me started on his production... The songs he produced solo (7/15 songs on the album) sound like rough demos/concepts. A lot of these songs have potential to be really cool and inventive genre-bending bops but they're just not executed well enough for an artist in the prime of her career. If I was an exec and heard an early cut of this album I would've demanded a co-producer on most of the Williams-produced tracks :saladga: Last month she posted "what are you most lookin forawrd to hearin ?"

And Pharrell responded "Your inner voice.."

so apparently he was able to convince her that her inner voice is Pharrell Williams :lolga:
