she almost f*cking died about a day ago, you've already victim blamed her and now you're saying she needs to he able to joke about it? what is wrong with you?

Well I agree with you that I am telling the truth. She is the victim of the actions she perpetrated unto herself, and I am blaming her as the perpetrator.

She almost died of overdosing, not from the jokes floating around internet. Unless she has a heart problem, a joke will not kill her.

But as I said, tough crowd.

I hate this argument that "Oh my gosh, it's a joke you guys need to calm down." Now personally, I love dark humor, I make pretty dark jokes in real life all the time, however as a comedian (or as just anyone with any social understanding), making a joke like this is pretty insensitive. It's way too soon. Demi's still recovering from the incident and there are still many people (family, friends, and fans) who are emotionally recovering from this incident.

Reality is harsh, and I understand in this social climate, many truths have to be hidden in order to protect other people's emotion. I'm sorry but I have to stick with the truth; I don't think society can progress if we keep tabooing everything. If you say it is too soon, then you risk never being able to joke about it. When is the right time to joke about these things for a comedian like you? I would suspect your answer is never.

First of all, I was never referencing myself as a comedian, but PewDiePie as a comedian. Also “I don’t think society can progress if we keep tabooing everything??” This isn’t gay rights or anything, this is a dumb joke. Society isn’t going to progress with such trivial humor either.

It’s just a part of understanding societal queues to know when a joke is “too soon” or not. She literally was hospitalized the day before he made this joke. Hell, 9/11 jokes are still “too soon.” That phrase is relative to a lot of people. I mean look at the gladiators. You can make jokes about them even when they were savages and brutal, but it was literally thousands of years ago, so who cares?

This whole “it’s just a joke” argument can a lot of times be used to undermine and excuse shitty and dumb behavior like Felix did here. What’s wrong with society and what hinders progression is a lack of compassion and empathy, not one’s ability to not make stupid jokes.

Criticising Demi for doing drugs make me part of the problem? Honey, please get a reality check before commenting.

Respect is earned, and doing drugs isn't going to earn mine quite frankly.

What Pewdiepie did and what you supported was not criticism, it was bullying plain and simple. And yes, if you condone bullying someone with a mental disorder then you are a part of the problem.

You don’t have to respect Demi for doing drugs, in fact I agree that you shouldn’t. But that doesn’t give you the right to bully her.

I agree we should not bully people. And it is good to define what bully is.

According to Oxford it is to use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force them to do something.

From that it can be scarcely said that PDP bullied her in any sense of the word.

As you can glean from this thread, the majority opinion there are two camps of view: the first criticises her actions, the second casts her as a victim of her uncontrollable addiction. I do not think the latter will help society progress in any favourable direction. It's telling Demi, if you do fall into an overdose again, it's OK, we know you have an addiction and you can't control yourself. I think that is in no way helping her at all. On the other hand, this humour correctly shows that it was her own agency, her overdose was her responsibility, it was within her control. So I think humour does help point society towards truth, and truth can never be a bad thing.

If you make a joke that no one cares about like the gladiators, then the joke is simply irrelevant and no longer a societal issue. There is simply no point in making jokes like that. Who would listen? The sooner the joke is the more the truth of the situation is exposed. In fact, going back to the first point, it is only not too soon when no one cares, and the joke loses its punch.

In case you misunderstand, I feel sorry for Demi for having this addiction and overdose, and I feel sorry for her family going through this, but in saying that I think everyone is entitled to voice their opinion, whether flippantly or seriously.

Whatever you want to call it, making fun of Demi’s mental disorder to millions of young impressionable followers only a day after that mental disorder nearly took her life is wrong. In what universe is that ok or even excusable?

I think excusing someone's overdose as mental disorder is irresponsible to millions of young impressionable followers. You're encouraging them to take drugs. You are telling them they do not have to take responsibility for their actions once they get addicted because they have no control over it. On the contrary, making fun of this is one of the most effective way of showing society's disapproval. It will teach her young impressionable followers that doing drug can lead to serious consequences. To otherwise condone it is truly inexcusable.

“Addiction is a brain disorder characterized by compulsivte engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences.”

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addiction

addiction literally is a mental disorder though. The rest of your comment is just so wrong I don’t know where to begin. All I said was you shouldn’t make fun of someone for ALMOST DYING A DAY AGO and from that you’re making wild assumptions like encouraging children to do drugs?? Do you even hear yourself?

Making fun of something is NOT the most effective way to show societies disapproval. Making fun of addiction serves to make a mockery of a very serious topic, it reduces its weight and makes it hard for people to take it seriously. Drug addiction is a very serious topic and deserves to be treated as such.

We tell children not to joke about the holocaust. Why? Because it makes light of the suffering and deaths of millions of people. Drug addiction has also caused the suffering and deaths of millions of people, shouldn’t we treat it with the same level of seriousness?

What? This makes no sense. Labeling addiction as a mental disorder is not condoning drug use. It's acknowledging that addiction is something that happens in our brains that requires help to overcome. Completely the opposite. It's encouraging people to seek help when they need it.

Word! I don't usually sign in on GGD, but I signed in just to react to your comment. We need to be able to be as politically incorrect as possible, because if we keep censoring ourselves as to what is appropriate to say and not, then how can we even begin to talk about more important issues?

You’re acting like jokes are the foundation of society and humanity. It’s not that ****ing deep. It’s not like Felix was trying to create some sort of profound statement with this, he was mocking her for a serious issue that she has. Like I posted on my previous posts in this thread, I suggest people like you do your research and look into the affects of drug addition to the body. This isn’t just something she can stop cold turkey, she’s gone to rehab and has gotten medical and professional help for this. Addition is a mental disorder. It affects your nervous system: it affects the neurotransmitters and how they’re passed through the synaptic cleft and into the neuron. It’s genetic and biological. Yes, it’s fair to criticize her initial decision to take drugs but it isn’t to criticize her addition. This is legitimately something she cannot stop.  What IS hurting society is not the lack of criticism, but the lack of utter respect and compassion. I’m sure you’re the kind of person who would have no compassion for suicide victims then, right?

And again, don’t act like this joke was some philosophical scripture. It was dumb, stupid, and insensitive. I don’t take myself as a comedian, but I realize simple social queues, and he completely missed the mark on this one.
