Jack White says ‘Taylor Swift way’ of writing break-up songs is ‘boring’

Jack White has said that the idea of writing songs about public breakups “in the Taylor Swift way” is not “interesting at all” to him.

The “Seven Nation Army” musician was asked about the use of autobiographical details in his own songwriting when he made reference to Taylor Swift, whose  romantic relationships have inspired a raft of songs throughout her career.

Swift is widely believed to have written songs about her relationships with exes – including musicians Joe Jonas and Matty Healy, and actor Joe Alwyn. More recently, her songwriting has been informed by her ongoing relationship with her fiancé, NFL player Travis Kelce.

“Are any of your songs entirely autobiographical?” White was asked, in a new interview with The Guardian.

“Not too much,” The White Stripes frontman replied. “Now it’s become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired break-ups, which I don’t find interesting at all. I think it’s a little bit boring for me to write about myself.

“Even if I’ve had a really interesting day, I feel like I’ve already lived that, I don’t need to go through it every time I sing this song,” he continued. “If it’s something really painful, I’m not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over.”

White explained that he puts “a percentage” of his personal experience into his own songwriting, so he can then “morph it into somebody else’s character”.

“I can’t really learn about myself until I put it into somebody else’s shoes,” he added.

that's quite interesting to hear, i'd like to see gaga's perspective on this since she's an artist who regularly releases music that's autobiographical about her struggles, relationships, physical pain and trauma despite being a very private person...

i wonder what she feels listening/singing Y&I or music from Joanne (or Speechless) in regards to her family... and since she quite boldly proclaimed her love for michael with BOG, how will she feel about it 10 years from now?

mother, what must i do?

Honestly, it’s part of the reason why I love that she tends to tell her stories in a more fantastical way because it prevents the songs from being stuck in a specific moment in time and, even if they are personal, a lot of her songs can be recontextualized because of that.

She grows and the songs become contextualized in different ways.

Like, it's rumored that the person she wrote Brown Eyes with/for is the one that assaulted her but she both sang it and used it as an encore song at The Mayhem Ball. I guess now it's a symbol of strength and healing. "Look how far I've come since then" :bradley:

She said she wrote Brown Eyes about a hugely successful rockstar she used to date. Rob Fusari is… not that

but she also said she wrote Perfect Illusion about Instagram being full of illusions, so who knows :ladyhaha:

Ugh, Jack White needs to keep women artists’ names out of his mouth. I’m no Taylor fan, and I love much of Jack’s music, but he’s so pretentious and always has been.

He’s been critical of Gaga in the past, saying she’s too theatrical and relies too much on gimmicks, or some such uninformed nonsense, and it pisses me off.

I chalk this up to The Patriarchy. People are allowed to make boring art however they want. Maybe Taylor’s music isn’t for him. 👀 But hetero men seem to think everything should be for them.

oh definitely, i mean she's never really had a hit song that's a really detailed break up like miss swift but she has a handful of songs that contain unique details they can be attributed to people in her life and i fully agree she adapts the context

you can really tell when a song is inspired by someone or not with her too and it's exactly why i refuse to believe PI being about taylor... it's too vague :grr: the social media explanation is just to cover up the fact it's a kevin parker demo rather than a break up song with "coincidental" timing, her songs about lovers always contain details

i'd like to know if she thinks she has any songs that are stuck in time that she doesn't really enjoy revisiting (her answer used to be Telephone due to stressful production) now that we've had records about mental health, family, drug use and pain... like would she be able to adapt the context of Dope?

mother, what must i do?

IMO, more than anything, I think PI is about celebrity/“being Lady Gaga” and being disillusioned with that side of her self and that part of her life (“I feel you watching me…” I’m over the show, yeah, at least now I know it wasn’t love”).

Maybe hot take but he’s kinda ignorant for this. A lot of artists songs are inherently autobiographical. I just hate artists who criticize others art. It puts a really bad taste in my mouth. You can just say “it’s not for me” and leave it at that.

Didn't she cry when she used Dope as the encore song? :bradley:I imagine it's much of the same feeling for any song she's written about hardship. It just becomes about something that you overcame :bradley:

Like, I haven't touched proper drugs in about a decade but Dope still means the world to me because it reminds me of where I came from and where I am now. She has to feel the same way.

As for PI, that's hilarious :ladyhaha: did we ever find out how much of that song she personally wrote or? I totally believe it's got a dual meaning to her. Or, at least it did. Now that she's well past healed from that breakup the song probably has no negative power over her, it's just a jam :music:

and lets face it, if she said that back then, the fanbase would have imploded into a black hole, they were already mad over a soft rock pop song :icant:

sounds like jack white should read this thread and realise maybe, writing about yourself can actually be a healing process that helps highlight progress rather than coming for the chief executive fraudster swift for clicks! :iamfair:
