Did Bad Romance Kill Paparazzi?

When BR peaked at #2 for the first time, Paparazzi was still in the top 10. Do you think Paparazzi could've been bigger than it was if it hadn't been overshadowed? :oprah:

YES!

As a chart freak I can verify, this is EXACTLY what happened.

Paparazzi would've gone on to go bigger.

You can see it if you look at the singles performances of the songs

The week before Bad Romance debuted, Paparazzi was still making gains on the Hot 100 (as noted by the bullseye):

The week Bad Romance debuted Paparazzi stayed at the same position, but didn't gain points:

The following week, Paaparazzi starting falling on the chart:

This has to do with Papparazzi being pulled from radio. It was #1 on Pop Radio when Bad Romance debuted and then just kept falling. It should've been at #1 on Pop radio longer than a week.

Yes I thought Paparazzi was going to peak at number 3-4 on BB100 due to the amount of hype the song received. Also it was a strong fan favorite from her debut album.

In terms of chart performance yes

In terms of iconicness no. Paparazzi is iconic globally and is one of her timeless classics which i believe will always age well! The song was lapped up by the gp and just because it wasnt a number 1 hit doesnt mean the gp dont have this song locked in their memory.

The US charts get very stagnant tbh, Paparazzi got to 4 here but it was a hit months before in the UK and most of the world before the US. Its so difficult to make a song big across the whole of america because america is just so big and full of different media outlets, cultures, tastes so songs dont gain traction quickly most of the time. Whereas in the UK you have moments in pop nationwide, the whole country gets fed mostly the same entertainment whereas when i was in the US theres little consistency between states and in each state i found like 2 certain songs were force fed to the public in that area and overplayed so much. I love America so much so dont come for me but the BB100 is a poor chart in my eyes.

The irony in this is that if Gaga's team had waited maybe Paparazzi would've charted better and BR might've hit #1 (post the Tik Tok slayage) :air:

I think so. It was a common pop-music chart strategy to release a new single right after the last one back then

But i think it worked perfectly for her. By the time Bad Romance came out she already had 4 top tens under her belt in the US in such a short space of time and then she brought Bad Romance out which has a chorus with like an anthemic chant. How it seemed at the time was as if she was trying to take over the world (succesfully may i add) rather than take over the charts (but she was doing that at the same time to some level). It seems only stans take note of charts stats, but Gaga was looking at the bigger picture which included having the look, the controversy, the best videos, the fame. She made sure everyone of all age groups young and old new her and her songs like BR and she new that was more important then chart peak positions. You cant have everything go your way but tbh i dont really care if BR didnt get to number 1 in the US because to the gp who dont look into charts it probably did reach 1 in their eyes.

Very this ^

It would have at least gone top3.

It's x4Platinum after all. Such a smash.

Btw, a similar situation happened between BTW and Judas. BTW was still doing ok and was top5 when Judas was released, but radio pulled it and started playing Judas more so the week Judas made its debut, BTW fell to #13. Unfortunately Judas wad pulled from radio too due to the controversy so besides fvcking up with their 2nd single choice, they also dragged the lead which was still doing good down. We were lucky we had TEOG and to a certain extent Y&I too later on. Things haven't been the same since Judas tho

I just think they thought more is better, hence BTW's campaign.

OMG yes. I was just thinking about making a thread about it today :cryga:

Too bad they rushed things. Paparazzi needed its moment to shine... they could debut Bad Romance at the Grammys or idk
