Scarlett Johansson faces backlash for trans role

Hillary Swank was great in Boys Don't Cry, and I'm sure Scarlett will do good like her.

But I strongly agree with the people who raise the objection about casting a cis woman. They should have cast a real TRANS!

Acting is acting  You don't need to face the same struggles or lead the same life as the character you're portraying. Also, at the end of the day the movie has to make money and famous faces are regularly used to promote movies.

I can't remember all of this backlash when Eddie Redmayne starred in The Danish Girl either

I was getting ready to post this nearly word for word but ya beat me to it.

I do get both sides of the argument here tho.

Swank was AMAZING in that film. One of my fave performances.   Again, as you say tho...I do totally get the argument.

Nobody has heard of that movie or that actor, so I think that's the difference.

Anyway, yes it is problematic that they're relying on straight cisgender people to play LGBT people. It's not about the person's ability to act the role (I kind of suspect that deep down, you really know that); it's about marginalizing groups of "others" even as you tell their story. Would you be okay with white people playing other races rather than the studio trying to get people of color to play those roles? There is a LOT of public backlash when that happens (which it does a lot, especially in stage theatre), and this really isn't any different. Let us be a part of telling our stories. Give those roles to deserving people who can bring their full selves to bringing those characters to life. We don't need to fill every movie with famous white people.

So many men have played female roles: Tyler Perry, Robin Wilson, Martin Lawrence, etc.

It’s 2018 so people will complain either way, but to me, this isn’t a big deal. It’s acting, it’s a role, so people get upset about a person who doesn’t have cancer playing a character who’s dying of cancer? No... overreacting.

Isn’t that just drag though? None of the people those men have played actually existed. If Scarlett’s role was a made up drag king I doubt anyone would care.

They would care. People care about everything in this era of society. Which can be a good thing, but for me, an acting role isn’t that much of a big deal. I mean Hollywood is superficial and that’s already known. They continue to cast a white man as Jesus :huntyga:

the movie will bomb anyway I feel haha

I dream of a time when an actor is just an actor and their role doesn't matter. Cis hetero people portraying trans gay people, or trans people portraying cis people, or gay people portraying hetero people, it really shouldn't matter.

I can't imagine what people would say about the beautiful movie Cloud Atlas if it was released today...smh

This comparison, let's not even go there with that one  :saladga:

The issue is trans people were not given equal opportunity, it was not a case of "oh scarlet just happened to smash the audition".  He was trans, so why not cast a trans person? The reason why is because they fear commercial failure and prefer to hire an A lister for profit.  Sure it's a business but come on, trans people are never going to be given a voice unless they are given a platform and they damn well would never be cast in the role of a cis person either. So where does that leave them eh? Damned to be overshadowed by the Hollywood lights and you can bet they'll get a standing ovation for 'pushing boundaries' when all they did was reinforce them.

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

Blame the person/people who cast her in the movie. If it wasn't Scarlett, it would be some other actress.

When this topic has come up before, I've asked these questions: wouldn't it not be best to cast someone who isn't trans? Surely a biological woman is the best choice to play a biological woman who wants to change gender? Isn't a fully transititioned person actually counterproductive because they look too masculine/feminine post-op? Wouldn't a cisgender person accurately portray the before stage of a transsexual's life (in their initial state, with no hormones or surgery) as opposed to a person who had fully transitioned? Wouldn't a transsexual potentially even find it traumatising to undo their hard work and present themselves as man/woman which they don't want to be?

Just some food for thought.
