I remember DJWS said Gaga emailed him about collaborating, he sent her a beat (BM’s) and she worked a song into it. This means that BM was made like much of ARTPOP with a beat first and then everything grew out of it which, frankly, you can tell because the melody of BM follows the beat *so* well whereas other songs of hers written at piano don’t do the same thing. Usually her productions just heighten and highlight the melodies she writes, but when she does the ARTPOP style of writing music it all kind of melds together sonically. So I agree with you. That rumor is false; however, I do think she was ruminating with the concept earlier than much of Born This Way judging by the lyric “I’ll tell them my religion’s you.” It appears nowhere else on the album oddly enough about religion yet appears all over Teeth on TFM. So I think she must have at least been thinking about the song earlier or she wrote it earlier than most of the album.

Electric Chapel is 100% all about religion though. :selena: While that is her writing process indeed, they only met in early 2010 (after she had seen him perform in an LA club). I don't think she started writing Bloody Mary in TFM era, I think it was remnant of the era's end, rather than it was during the era since it overlapped with the time period.

Oh I agree, I just mean the ideas behind Bloody Mary may have been in her head before, not the song itself. Or maybe a lyric or line (like TFM one I mentioned). And yes, Electric Chapel is about religion, much of BTW is, I meant specifically that line doesn’t show up elsewhere when it was on TFM. Like, I think on the tail end of TFM she started thinking about faith more and then that evolved into the sonics of BTW. BM could very well have been somewhere between TFM and the full BTW concept is what I’m trying to say.
