From that interview: “I know most Muslim people would not have carried out an attack like this. But here’s the important point: Hundreds of millions of them support an attack like this. They applaud an attack like this. What they say is, ‘We don’t approve of violence, but you know what? When you make fun of the Prophet, all bets are off.” Specifically in regards to the Charlie Hebo attack, a poll by ComRes for the BBC showed that over a quarter of British Muslims sympathized with the attackers. Here is a pretty bleak study released by Pew in 2013 about global attitudes in the Muslim community about issues like apostasy and blasphemy. http://www.pewforum.org/files/2013/04/worlds-muslims-religion-politics-society-full-report.pdf This still doesnt excuse numerous other islamphobic things he has said. Although... like... from the tweets I've seen, Roseanne's jokes are either like... weird or... she's got some strange opinions? IDEK. But like... yee yee she's a hard set conservative who's tweets are fascist and racist in nature outside of this singular incident, please don't defend her. Sure, but it undermines your claims because it proves you are willing to watch a video of him speak, and immediately misquote and misrepresent his statements so that they validate your own beliefs. It's a perfect example of conformation bias.

I wouldnt go that far, as he has said things that are very similar and he continues to generalize muslims as a whole but if you want to believe that go ahead. freebit 6,240
I mean, I believe people often lack nuance when deciding to #cancel people, but Roseanne is a pretty cut & dry case. Just because she had black friends at one time doesn't mean she can't be a racist.
Eighteen 5,430
honestly, from what i've been seeing on this thread, the other roseanne thread, twitter, on bill maher, is that the left is moving further left, the right is moving further right, and no one is left in the middle. i myself am at the far left (though there are exceptions here and there, an example being my position on this roseanne being racist thing, which i consider myself placed at the middle of the issue so to speak) but this polarization regarding everything is tearing the US apart. and i fear that it'll only get worse. with nobody in the middle ground, the left and the right will continue to find it impossible to negotiate anything. nobody is listening to the other and i can tell this is the case from what i'm reading here. I agree. Obama was just talking about this a few days ago, he was saying how toxic for our democracy our current level of political divisiveness has become. This thread, Rosanne's tweet, and the reaction to Rosanne's tweet perfectly demonstrate that. The horseshoe theory in political science asserts that rather than the far left and the far right being at opposite and opposing ends of a linear political continuum, they in fact closely resemble one another, much like the ends of a horseshoe. The theory is attributed to French writer Jean-Pierre Faye.

Plenty of people are in the middle. 42 per cent of Americans identify as Independents. Of those 42 per cent, 16 per cent lean Democrat and 14 per cent lean Republican, but they don't feel strongly enough to registry for those parties. Referring to a black person as a "monkey" or an "ape" in the US has been a deal-breaker for decades now. There wasn't middle ground, because this isn't seen as a grey area in the US. Just so you know, Roseanne has had a history of racism, bat-**** conspiracy theorism, and radical beliefs that is documented for almost 10 years on social media alone, and this isn't even the first time she has called people "apes", specifically women in the last few years. If you think racist is a title that must be earned through much much evidence, there is certainly much for Rosenne Barr. Also, rationally, being good with black people, helping black people, having black friends, etc. all of these do not make someone incapable of being racist. The only thing that makes you not racist is active work to unpack racist ideas, beliefs, and actions, and spreading this with other people. Bigger picture though, when does something stop being a joke and when does it become indicative of their real held beliefs, conscious or subconscious? We are all products of our environment, and often times these racist "jokes" rely on the audience somewhat believing a stereotype about people of that race. How is that not racist? Is it just because it isn't meant to be serious? That's not really how conversation works. Just because you don't "intend" for something to be offensive or rude, racist, etc. it doesn't mean it isn't rude, racist, or offensive If I punch someone in the face, but I didn't intend to do it, it doesn't stop it from hurting, and while clarifying intent can lessen the (emotional) blunt of the attack, it still doesn't make it go away entirely, we can't control other people's physical or emotional responses, nor should we. (And claiming "you choose to be offended" is similarly BS. This just shifts blame and guilt from yourself when in reality the mature thing to do is to own up to the impact of your words and think before you speak in the future. A good, true apology is not only sincere, but it also carries with it the sentiment that you will work to avoid the behavior that has led to the incident) Honestly, I think we're better off acknowledging that most people are somewhat racist, and that being "not racist" is an abnormality, because the society we are raised in is very racist. We should accept the word, and refocus our efforts towards unpacking what it means to be racist, or to benefit from a racist system, instead of fearing the word. Everyone's a little bit racist, but not everyone continues to be racist once they acknowledge it and the average person would probably want to work to not be racist if they believed themselves to be so. 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから
