Japanese School Under Fire For Uniform Choice

A Tokyo public school has adopted Giorgio Armani uniforms for students, triggering criticism in a country where hefty school fees are already burdening young parents. Please mind this, public school (!!!)

Taimei Elementary School (泰明小学校) plans to introduce the new uniforms for their incoming first-graders. (front of the school pictured below):

 

The new set of uniform, including optional items, would cost around ¥90,000 (US $730++/£500++) for boys and slightly more for girls. This is how the uniform looks like:

The school’s principal, Toshitsugu Wada, told a news conference Friday that the top fashion brand would fit Taimei’s identity as “a school of Ginza.” He said he chose Armani because its boutique is near the school.

And naturally, many are not happy about this. Some of Japanese twitter shared their opinion about it:

Translation: "School uniform by Armani? I was wondering which private school it was. I can’t believe it’s a public school. If it’s an elementary school, they might have to buy a new one every year. I don’t know if I should say this but there’s something wrong with his head. Apparently, it’s the principal’s arbitrary decision but the Board of Education has nothing to say? It’s a public school, so anyone should be able to attend. It would be really stupid if someone had to change schools because they couldn’t afford the uniform."

 

 

Translation: "Looks like there’s a controversy about some school principal arbitrarily deciding to introduce an Armani school uniform costing 90,000 JPY but I heard that school uniforms were originally invented so that kids from families with different incomes wouldn’t be discriminated… I guess these days it’s turned into something that just displays (what school) you belong to."

 

Translation: "This is just my biased opinion. I don’t think the principal is a decent person. With such a principal, who’d still want to attend the school? I get annoyed while reading this…"

 

Wada acknowledged the new uniform would cost more, but considered it worth it. He said his decision is unchanged despite the criticism.

I think there might be some misconceptions. In America, public school means less resources but in many countries, e.g Hong Kong, where I live, some of the most prestigious elite schools are public schools due to their long history. Students are mainly from the upper middle to upper class families, grandkids of the richest in HK (Top 10 world’s richest) go to these schools.

Idk about this specific school in Japan but it’s probably one of those prestigious schools as well.

not that I support them for making kids wear Armani uniforms but probably some of the parents support that too

but tbh these uniforms look cool. I would feel like Prince George wearing them. Too bad I used to wear **** looking uniforms. As someone who grew up in a place where we wear uniform in school, I think a good looking one does make us look presentable in inter school events especially, definitely boosts our self esteem

If you read the article, you may find the answers of many of your assumption here tbh. It is said that the decision are made one sided by the school's headmaster. And that public school in Japan are for the less fortunate. Which is why it draw criticism from both, the regular folks and education board alike. There will be none of this if it was private school that does this.

Hong Kong adopted British education system being colonised by them for ages. But in many countries, public school means just that, a school subsidized by government for the non rich. I grew up in Asia and well aware of the differences.

that's a mess tho. Those uniforms are expensive, but if they can afford it then go for it. I just don't think these would matter eventually in their careers.

I am a proponent of school uniforms but this is excessive. Imagine that you have three kids that you have to buy these for every single year. Or like they get ripped or ruined in the wash because they are expensive and have to be “handled with extreme care”...what if they are dry clean only?
