I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say he’s refusing to denounce it. I just hope someone asks him the exact same question again after he meets with him.

He should be condemning that bigot, everyone knows that Moore is sick, but then again Trump is bigot too? He couldn’t even denounce nazis properly.

A reporter asked Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) how they could support Moore’s candidacy, given his statements in the past in favor of outlawing gay marriage and preventing Muslims from serving in Congress. 

Moore won the Alabama Republican Senate primary over Trump’s pick for the nomination, Luther Strange. Moore has deep ties to Confederate sympathizers and worked to keep pro-segregation language in the Alabama constitution. 

“I’m going to be meeting with Roy sometime next week and we’re going to talk to him about a lot of different things, but I’ll be meeting with him,” Trump responded to the reporter. “He ran a very strong race.” 

“The people of Alabama, who I like very much and they like me very much– But they like Roy, and we’ll be talking to him and I can report to you then, OK?” he concluded before moving on. McConnell did not answer the question. 

Despite their backing of Strange, both Trump and McConnell endorsed Moore to fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat of Attorney General Jeff Sessions when Moore won the state’s Republican primary.

So you can’t condemn kkk and nazis until you’ve met some of them? Maybe some are good people?

What makes you think he won’t avoid the answer next time too? He knows about Moore’s beliefs, they’re not secret.

Trump tried to dodge the question, declaring he was going to meet with him. It is the media’s job then to let him have his meeting and then proceed to ask him the same question again, without the excuse of potential negotiation. That’s all I was saying.

Moreover, in terms of your choice to immediately try (and fail) to insult me based off a response to your question, I’d encourage you to do some self-reflection. Your response was very.... Trump-like.

He will certainly try to avoid the question next time. It’s the media’s job to hold him accountable to the web of excuses he develops rather than focus on all the sensationalism that he wants them to focus on.  

In terms of the kkk/nazi anecdote you gave, of course that’s not what I’m saying. I just think the rhetoric and continued focus on these extreme examples constantly will only help him in 2020... and I don’t want that.

If you agree that he’ll try to avoid the question again, why are you saying he didn’t exactly refuse to denounce Moore? He did, he had chance to denounce him and his beliefs right there, because the question was clear.

Ok, the transcript helps give me more context. Let me first clarify by stating that yes, I think morally the right thing to do would have been to denounce it directly. 

I guess I see the whole situation as more just circumvention of the question rather than an outright, verbalized refusal. But yes, I can see where you are coming from. Perhaps, I’m just holding on to my last inkling of hope that this administration won’t be a complete and utter disaster in terms of LGBTQ rights in the U.S. Nevertheless, I do hope the media keeps him accountable and asks the same question following his meeting.
