Iran, Turkey against independent Kurdistan

"Turkey, Iran and Iraq will decide together whether to halt Iraqi Kurdistan’s oil exports as regional powers increase the pressure on the autonomous region after it held an independence referendum.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, said after a one-day trip to Iran that the three nations would act jointly on sanctions against the Kurdistan Regional Government. The Kurdish authorities depend on a pipeline through Turkey to export about 500,000 barrels of oil a day but also ship oil through Iran. 

Ankara had been one of the KRG’s staunchest allies and has often had strained relations with Baghdad and Tehran. But concerns that the referendum threatens to destabilise the region and could embolden Kurds in neighbouring countries to push for greater autonomy have caused a thaw in relations as the three countries align to put more pressure on the KRG. 

Baghdad has closed Kurdish airspace to international flights and has said it will block foreign currency transfers and the sale of dollars to banks in the autonomous region. 

Turkey and Iraq have also carried out joint military exercises in the border region since the referendum, while Iran has conducted its own in the area. 

Kurds voted overwhelming in favour of independence but Kurdish leaders have stressed the poll would not automatically trigger a unilateral break from Iraq. 

Mr Erdogan sought to blame Israel for the referendum. “There is no country other than Israel that recognises it. A referendum which was conducted by sitting side by side with Mossad has no legitimacy,” he said, referring to the Israeli intelligence agency.

The US was also opposed to the referendum. But Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, said in his meeting with Mr Erdogan that the US could not be trusted. “Foreign powers” were making a “new Israel” through the referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Mr Khamenei said Iran, Turkey and Iraq had to act “quickly” through “united political and economic decisions” to deal with the new threats in the region.

Turkey, a Sunni power, and Shia Iran have often been at loggerheads over regional policy and backed rival parties in Syria’s civil war. But shifting dynamics in the Middle East and Ankara’s deteriorating relations with the US and Europe have made them increasingly aligned. 

Both support Qatar in its dispute with its Gulf neighbours and have co-operated to help broker talks between Syria’s warring parties. 

In a sign of the improving ties, Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s president, suggested on Wednesday that Turkey buy more Iranian gas, an issue that has previously strained relations between Ankara and Washington."

Oh Erdogan  My views on them (Israel) have been made clear, but what does Israel have to do with Kurds wanting independence? I'm guessing that the Iraqi government is considering the referendum to be illegal  Yay suppression

Well we could turn this around, the hypocrisy is everywhere... why is Israel supporting independent Kurdistan, but it’s against Palestinian self determination and right of return?

Oh fascist Turkey and Iran against the only secular country on Middle East? How surprising. Erdogan has no right to speak again Israel, since he always goes to Israel to back himself up. He just met with Israel-based groups in his recent visit to New York. Iran and Turkey are against Kurdistan because they are being extremely suppressive to Kurdish people on their own countries.
