Irma's sustained winds reach 180 mph or more than 285 kph. This makes it the most powerful hurricane since 1998, also only 7 other storms have ever reached these wind speeds since we have been taking records. Wind gusts have reached up to 220 mph or over 350 kph Also just to put it into perspective, this storm is larger than the state of Ohio and has wind speeds of bullet trains or race cars This storm is now stronger than Katrina, it is also the strongest storm to ever hit the northern leeward Islands. If it hits Puerto Rico it will also become the strongest hurricane in the modern history of the island. My heart sunk when I saw this update , my heart aches for everyone affected STAY SAFE!!!! If this storm hits Florida or the gulf, we will see something beyond inconceivable. buttsicle 6,484 Posted September 5, 2017 Share Posted September 5, 2017 Oh god, I live in the UK and we never get anything this terrifying The worst we get is the leftovers of average hurricanes that cause a bit of flooding, nothing this devastating though I hope everyone in the path of Irma stays safe, especially now that it's a category 5 hurricane Spoiler I feel bad for living in the UK because we hardly get anything. No volcanoes, no earthquakes, no tornadoes, no (bad) hurricanes. Safety before property! I'm a Florida native - that's the panhandle, since it juts out from the rest of the state. If the 'pan' were a long, skinny thing, then its handle would be the counties containing Panama City, Pensacola, Tallahassee, etc. I mean I did but idk, they just moved back there again in their retirement so they're not used to the severity of hurricanes. We only have human-made fires and floodings on the north/interior during winter and they're not that agravated. Last continental disaster was a earthquake+ a tsunami+ a fire in the same day...in 1755 . Since then, one or two earthquakes every once in a while in the islands and that's it. OT thought, this hurricane is really worrying and I really hope everyone is okay.
