SiliconeMonster 1,617
There's a lot of people who think celebrities have no authority to voice political views because they're just celebrities. That logic doesn't entirely make sense to me when average people feel qualified to voice their opinions too. With such a huge public platform, it just opens up to more criticism. I think she should be allowed to voice her opinion as well, but should remain completely aware with the fact that regardless of what she says, people WILL disagree with her and drag her. Even if she DOES check her privilege and spread kindness. People these days have to remain defensive because there is so much ugly, but some people on Twitter are just mindlessly hostile. KingRedd 3,139
As a black man my opinion may not be the most liked in the black community but I'm sick of black twitter only bashing people for attempting to help or use their voices for the right reason. It was not a group of black people that the attacker drove into. It was a group of PEOPLE as in different races were hit. This should not be a black issue, it should be a minority issue as white supremacist do not like ANY minority- not just black people. Gaga simply asked what needed to be done to help prevent situations like this and to help spread equality and love coming from white people who are not racist and now all of black twitter is trying to drag her because they feel like all white people are racist and need to acknowledge their privilege? As a black man I don't need to be beg any white person for their sympathy and acknowledgment. Its like twitter only wants to be negative and when someone finally gives them a chance to say what it is that can help, they totally ignore it and bring up pointless stuff and its embarrasing the community in my opinion. Saying all white people are racist is ridiculous and unfair. Black people need to come together with solutions instead of ranting and raving on twitter for likes thinking that they are doing something. Tumblr 1,846
From what I've seen: It seems like she's asking questions instead of just listening to what is already there. People are sharing videos on what she's asking underneath her tweets which are easy to find anyway. The Trump being racist or not-racist poll was not-needed because she should be able to express her opinion on that herself instead of conducting polls that can be easily influenced by right-wing sites/userbases. I personally think her heart is in the right place tho, just wish she came at it from a different angle Mariah - Ariana - Rihanna

Should I not take a job if i know that the offer would have been given to a person of color if not for me? Should I donate a portion of my paycheck to minority communities? I took a race and inequality class in college last semester and found it upsetting myself that this is a thing. Just like how we don't choose to be white, POC don't choose to be POC. It's out of our control in that sense. So, what POC really want from white people is admittance that a system of inequality DOES exist. It's not individual choice, it's embedded in society and has been since day 1. Change won't occur overnight, but becoming educated and aware will bring change over time. Best thing to do is to be aware of privileges as a white person (we're talking about human rights, not wealth or jobs) and reassess what you know about people of color. This. The issue is that a lot of white people don't actively stand up against a racist society because it benefits white people. I think a lot of people were annoyed because they expect Gaga to already know what she is asking for (which she doesn't have to - it doesn't affect her on a personal level because she is white). But I'm sure a lot of people also appreciate that she's opening channels of conversation for black people and white people to discuss allyship (especially since she's has so many gay fans, where racism is an issue in the community). But it's Twitter, so it's going to be hostile and she's going to take the brunt of it unfortunately. Mariah - Ariana - Rihanna

Being aware is certaintly a good thing but what else can we do besides that? I hate being blamed for something so much bigger than me, just because I am white. geopang 4,831
Instead of being mad at Gaga, they should be mad at all the other pop "queens" who haven't said a word about this whole situation.

It seems to me that minority groups think racism is the only issue or most important issue facing society. We can't stand up for every issue that exists. Why is racism more important to stand up against than child poverty or the prison system or lgbtq rights?

You can care about more than one issue.
