Was Paparazzi at the VMAs 2009 an ode to MJ's life?

I was thinking, the same evening there was this MJ tribute act with Janet Jackson and MJ's life has always been in the spotlight and been followed by paparazzi. I wasn't a big stan of Gaga back then, but in a way the Paparazzi performance at the VMAs seemed like a reflection of MJ's life:how he got plagued by paparazzi and him trying to make a comeback with This Is It. It just blew my mind seeing the Paparazzi performance in that context

I think it's more general to any major star...

I will never understand how that performance never got any backlash from being the year the MJ tribute also happened. I'm not saying i want there to be backlash but It just feels weird that no one felt anything about her talking about dying celebrities and literally "dying" and bleeding on stage the same night they had a tribute for (arguably) (?) THE most famous entertainer ever...

please enlighten me to death

I always felt it was more inspired by Lady Diana

but yeah, it represent the medias obsession over celebrities and their deaths so Michael could have inspired it as well

My thoughts exactly. but she was the IT girl back then, only later during the Alejandro/early BTW era we began to see backlash growing

It was probably inspired by the unfortunate narrative of media sensationalism following celebrities, occasionally proving fatal.

MJ definitely fit into that, but I think that's more general than anything. As @Panchecco mentioned, I get a lot more Princess Diana "murdered by the media and the Royal Family conspiracy theory" teas.

3 points in and ready for more
