I don't think she can. Maybe she's still got it in her to produce a quality album in the future but as far as commercial success goes? I think this is her last era as a huge name in pop music. It's clear that her young fanbase has outgrown her and her new material hasn't shown enough growth for her older fans. Her singles and albums performances show that she has been losing fans since Prism and with the lack of a hit single in the final run-up to the album, she's in a position she's never been in before, which is her album is about to come out and there is absolutely no hype going for it. Her vocals have also been disastrous this era and I think it's really going to put people off going to see her on tour. I don't know how she could possibly have any more hits this era. And if this is how she's faring after coming off a successful era, how will she do in the future? Here's a run-down of her first week US sales, chart peaks and overall sales.

One Of The Boys - 47,000 copies, #9 peak and 1.7 million copies sold to date (released 1 month after I Kissed A Girl went to #1)

Teenage Dream - 192,000 copies, #1 peak and 3 million copies sold to date (released 2 months after California Gurls went to #1 and 1 week after Teenage Dream went to #7)

Prism - 286,000 copies, #1 peak and 1.7 million copies sold to date (released 1.5 months after Roar went to #1)

Witness -? It's been just over 4 months since Chained To The Rhythm debuted and peaked at #4 on Billboard. Bon Appetit has peaked at #57 and Swish Swish is currently at #46 and falling on itunes. This is not looking good. Of course she'll have better debut sales than One Of The Boys but the chances of her even getting to Teenage Dream's level are very slim. The way the album market is right now, it's highly unlikely to even scrape a million copies in the US. Even with massive hype, Katy has never even reached 300k in the first week. With no hype leading up to this, I can't say I see her doing much better as she gets older and moves further away from her old style.

She had a good run. But she's just not got what it takes to have a long, successful career in the business. She doesn't have the versatility or the high level of talent, nor does she have any studio interest in her as an actress. I can't see how she can go much further than this.

In a way, this is worse. The first few weeks is when a song should be having its best performance if you're a household name like Katy. The first week is normally when your new song debuts at #1 on itunes. It's the following weeks when it gets tough. But right out the gate, Katy is struggling to have a hit. Not one of her new songs have hit #1 on US itunes at any time. America's her biggest market, so this is shocking. She hasn't gone to #1 on itunes since Dark Horse. Gaga managed to get The Cure to #1 on itunes despite it not being a lead single and it's sole promo performance being a Coachella appearance. If you're a big name, you're pretty much guaranteed to go to#1 on itunes upon release. The fact Katy's new material hasn't is cause for concern.

Plenty of artists now have amazing Vevo views and likes but their actual album sales are abysmal. Vevo views don't mean what they used to now. Back in the day, getting 100 million views was outstanding, hence why the Vevo certified award was born. But now, getting 1 billion views is the achievement. There's even ones that have topped 2 billion. Gangnam Style is almost 3 billion. Katy has 2 videos at over 1 billion views from the Prism era (one of them is at 2 billion and the other is at 1.9 billion) but none of her new stuff is anywhere close. She has over 22 million subscribers, so yes, she'll have more views and her videos are usually very OTT and re-watchable, which is why they notch up those views. But lately, her views have not matched up with the sales. I mean, This Is How We Do has 606 million views despite it only peaking at #27 on Billboard. And like you just said, her biggest ever US flop, Bon Appetit, #57, has just passed 102 million views in less than a month. That should tell you how little correlation between hits and video views you should make.

I love reading your posts :diane: So insightful
