It's not a white as in the race Caucasian thing, Judy a term my friends and I use, thought it was more popular. Everyones putting out bland music yes, but for the past while, only the albums by black artists were any good out of the AOTY noms, the rest were by white artists (not all of them but most) and they were pretty subpar (maybe not 25, but it wasn't that exciting either). 25 over Lemonade 1989 boring over TPAB That Beck one over BEYONCÉ RAM over GKMC Bable over CO and then from then down they were pretty even as far as quality. Black artists are making boring music too, but some white artists are making entertaining music, but sadly it's not getting nominated (gaga, Lana, even Ariana) What I mean is that the Grammys always seem to nominate really good albums by black artists, and then boring albums by white artists, who end up winning. It's confusing. This year I think the same might happen, seeing as Kendrick made yet another masterpiece, but I honeslty see it going to the most boring of all these albums mentioned, Divide by the elf. It's annoying, and if they want it to change they should nominate more than one quality album like they did from 2012 down. Shouldnt of brought race in, just noticing some patterns with them recently. Well, I've never heard the phrase used in any way other than racially (unless you're talking about painting a wall, of course). Just to be aware that not everyone has cottoned on to your definition. Really, only the albums by black artists were any good in the noms of recent years? Granted, I didn't think any of the 2013 noms were good enough for nominations but sorry, Channel Orange was too avant garde for me. In 2014, again, lots of undeserved noms but I think Macklemore deserved it (I think Kendrick's debut was his best work, but even then, I still thought it was just ok). 2015, I agree with you, this is the only time that I supported a Beyonce win (even though I didn't listen to Morning Phase in full, I can see what critics saw in it, these kind of albums just work for them). In 2016, I was supporting The Weeknd, but yeah, this was the only time that I considered there might be a racist angle seeing as the academy gave Kendrick more award for his album than Taylor's. And last year, I thought Beyonce maybe deserved it as well and yeah, only deserving nom in the list in my mind (but there was still better albums that could've been there). At the end of the day, you have to sometimes think this stuff can all be a coincidence. Beyonce has now lost AOTY as many times as Gaga. So, if a white person has had the equal number of disappointments, how can we be thinking of racism? And Eminem has been nominated for AOTY multiple times but has never won. I think the conclusion you can draw from that is that the academy seem to have a problem with giving the biggest award to a rap album, it's nothing to do with the colour of the artist. The critics do tend to like boring albums, it's just how it works. If you want to see a pattern, look at how they tend to award it to commercial/indie every other year. Hoenstly, after I did all the research into whether the academy was racist or not, I actually came up with the exact opposite conclusion. Black artists have never had problems getting nominated and winning. Some of the whitest, prettiest, most commercial, most praised white artists have never won, in comparison. I just think it's so predictable to always assume racism is the reason. When you look deeper into the issue, a whole lot of other stuff becomes clearer. Talented people not getting nominated and winning for their efforts is just part of life. To pin it on a bigger societal force is just a bit too dramatic. Anderson123 38,556
Nice, they're doing the ceremony early, I like that. I really hope Joanne gets at least nominated, it deserves at least Pop Vocal Album. As for Million Reasons, it's the only chance it has. Out of the big releases this year (The Weeknd, Bruno, Ed Sheeran and Kendrick Lamar) there's always one or two that get snubbed on the Album of The Year category for another indie or not a best-selling album so lets see if Joanne has a chance to get there but I think Lorde's Melodrama will also get noticed.
