So all of you hating on Miley for "jumping on the urban bandwagon" -- how do feel about an Italian woman suddenly making an Americana-influenced country-tinged album? Oh...because country is "white", it's okay? Gotcha.

I'll let you know when Gaga gives an interview saying Country and Rock are all about ****ing women and getting drunk and she can't listen to that anymore.

Noup. What we're saying is that she should shut the hell up. Don't talk like this about something that you used to sell records. It's nasty and it's stupid.

Luckily we live in a free country with a free press wherein those interviewed can change their opinions on a genre as years go by.

If Gaga in 3 years says something like "Country music is disgusting. It stereotypes women and I'm ashamed" she's gonna get dragged. Why is this so hard to understand?

I'm expecting miley to duel the devil in a fiddle contest and bring her dead petz back to life in her first music video and if she doesn't deliver I'm done.

Sadly, she's not wrong. I worked at juvenile hall for a school year as a secondary teacher last school year. We had all the rap stations banned because all the songs the kids listened to were so graphic and sexualized and demeaning. Even most of the examples the other guy in this thread listed -- he picked out the "kindest" lyrics from songs with much worse in them. And the video for iSpy is nothing but the two guys objectifying women.

Bottom line: I have first hand experience of how bad of an influence current rap is to today's youth, especially young males. They WORSHIP these rappers. They try to imitate as much of the behavior too, including having zero respect for women. Those top 10 Drake pop/rap songs are generally harmless and Kendrick and J Cole and Chance and several others are doing great things, but much of today's rap is filthy and a horrible influence. Sounds like Miley just grew out of the Mike-Will-Make-It-led "hoes and money" type of songs.

I lover her, but that was so dumb. She used black culture as a prop and suddenly it's not cool anymore. Not a cute look, Miley. You can do better.

She wouldn't say that though, since rap music is far more objectifying than country is (though a lot of modern country is still pretty bad) and you know it. Your example doesn't work because it's not likely at all.

Miley is being too general with her statement, but there's truth to it. You guys seem more mad that you think she "used" a genre. I'm trying to explain that I don't believe you can "use" a genre because all art belongs to everyone. She made a statement with some truth and people chose to get offended and bash her rather than start a conversation.

Yeah, I'm not trying to say these kinds of things don't exist in Hip Hop. They're a prominent theme in a lot of popular music and Urban culture, but there are also many positives represented in the genre. I just don't think it's cool of Miley to generalise a genre after she used it to give her career a second wind and break free of her childhood image and transition into a more adult phase in her career. Especially after utilising the themes herself that she seems to detest so much about Hip Hop.

Maybe she's matured and developed new musical tastes and wants to make music that more represents who she is today, similar to Gaga experimenting with new genres in Joanne. And that's cool, I'm totally down for Miley to explore her musical influences and try new things. But Gaga didn't throw her old music under the bus, or talk **** about the genres that helped her become who she is.

I'm not here to SJW all over the place, I just think it's a **** move to use a certain genre to your advantage because it's cool (including using the negative parts you'll later criticise) and then turn around and trash it. It devalues her work and the genre itself. Makes her seem fake and fickle.

I get what you're saying, but she was wrong. Don't act brand new, Miley. You knew what you were doing. Rap/Hip-Hop aren't new genres. Did you realize that it was "nasty" just now? Please.

Anyways, Miley is a polarizing figure for me. I hope she realizes that stereotyping isn't cool. :nails:

Well, Gaga got dragged to hell and back when she talked **** about pop music during ARTPOP. And she deserved it.

I do believe many people are trying to have a conversation, but you are trying to defend Miley so much you aren't listening to anyone...and even dragging Gaga into this discussion in nonsensical comparisons.

Most the people who are discussing the comment are stating that they enjoy Miley's music or are looking forward to what she is going to put out in a couple of weeks. I love Miley, but raised an eyebrow a few times when reading that interview.

I'd prefer not to be referred to as "the other guy" :laughga: But here's the thing, I'm not suggesting that the messages in hip-hop are always perfect - the iSpy song does contain some misogynistic lines but you look at the vast majority of those songs I posted and they are not about 'bitches', gangs and fast cars..

Rap is so diverse and I just don't see the problems associated with rap as unique to that genre.

Rock music has super groups like Guns and Roses singing lyrics like “Turn around, bitch, I got a use for you/ Besides, you ain’t got nothing better to do/ And I’m bored.”

Younger acts like Fall Out Boy singing "Let’s play this game called “when you catch fire, I wouldn’t piss to put you out"/ Stop burning bridges, drive off of them/ So I can forget about you / So bury me in memory/His smile’s your rope/So wrap it tight around your throat"

Country/Folk music has legends like Neil Young singing lyrics like “keep my house clean, fix my meals, and go away.”

Younger acts like RaeLynn singing "Somebody's gotta wear a pretty skirt / Somebody's gotta be the one to flirt / Somebody's gotta wanna hold his hand / So God made girls, God made girls"

Pop music that has acts like Nick Jonas whose song "Jealous" is an ode to male control of women's bodies and relational abuse including lyrics like "I don't like the way he's looking at you," explaining his "right to be hellish," "obsessed" and "protective or possessive" because he feels "jealous."  And acts like Robin Thicke singing about "Blurred Lines"...

I'm not going to deny that there is misogyny in hip-hop - I'm just not going to pretend that this is all hip-hop is when there are countless progressive hip hop artists and I'm not going to pretend that it's a problem that only applies to hip-hop when there are countless of examples of misogyny in all facets of pop culture and in every genre.

I actually kinda dig Miley tbh and I'm excited for her new direction - but it's just not cool of her to appropriate hip-hop culture, wear it for an entire era and then throw it away and criticise and generalise hip-hop as if it was only empowering and progressive when she tried it out.

Good. Hip Hop doesn't suit her, especially her voice. I wish she would go back to her roots with country, she sounded amazing then.

Lace up my boots, throw on some leather and cruise.
