Ed Sheeran Faces $20 Million Law Suit For Copying A Song

"The British singer Matt Cardle opened a law suit for 20 million dollars against Ed Sheeran for copying his song "Amazing" to create the hit "Photograph". According to court documents that have been released, Sheeran and McDaid (the song's cowriter) were specifically accused of, ‘participating in a scheme aiding, inducing, and contributing to copyright infringement in the U.S.’ The case has been settled out of court, so we don't know the exact amount paid by Ed, but seeing that Matt was seeking 20 million, he probably got something close to that. I feel like cases like this happen all the time though, and often it's just a fact that pop songs will sound similar. What do you think? Check out both songs below and let me know if you think it was coincidence or if there was some copying going on. " - Source

1:45 vs 1:11, the chorus sounds way too similar in my opinion, finally someone takes action against his overrated copycat a**. I can see Sia suing him after Shape Of You reaches it's maximum audience :giggle:

They are similar but c'mon copying Matt Cardle of all people? :ladyhaha:

He's probably just trying to earn his wage since his career never took off.

its pretty common for singers to get inspiration from less known acts so it's not so obvious they're not being original at all :green:

That is literally the same song in a different key. I have never seen anything so blatantly plagiarised before.

And to think that Ed Sheeran has the audacity to say everyone's copying him and his style. Piss off. :ladyhaha:

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

Of course but yeah it's just similar imo.  I agree with the quote in the OP that it's typical of pop music but GGD will crucify him I'm sure anyway.

This is yesterdays news.

"Ed Sheeran's $20 million "Photograph" lawsuit is behind him.

According to THR, court papers were filed dismissing the case with prejudice, and a stipulation stated that a California federal court would "retain jurisdiction to enforce the terms of an agreement." It's not known what the settlement entailed, but Sheeran, Sony/ATV and Warner Music likely ponied up something to avoid the case escalating further.

The news comes several weeks after Sheeran added TLC's "No Scrubs" co-writers to the writing credits of "Shape Of You," probably to avoid another headache like this."

Why hasnt Sia already sued him.

She'd also have to sue everyone else for using that tropical vibe... and I'm not sure she'd have the time for that
