Lowkey agree.

love Perfect Illusion as well, and it's definitely one of her most underrated songs, but I feel like A-YO not only is more GP friendly, but it captures the feel of Joanne more than PI does, in my opinion. It's also a very "Mark Ronson" track, like, you could clearly tell that Mark had an influence, and produced the song, which I think would be a good thing, considering how much she talked about having Mark in the studio working with her.

Also, maybe this is just me, but I got a sense that Gaga wasn't into having PI as the lead that much, I mean, she didn't promote it nearly as much as she needed to, and she just didn't seem really enthusiatic about it during interviews. Plus, we all know that A-YO's one of her favorite songs, so I feel like if A-YO were the lead, it would have gotten better promo compared to PI.

This. I love PI and Gaga does too but I have a feeling it was pushed to be the lead single because they thought it would get more promo with people speculating whether it was about Taylor (which it clearly is) as it hadn't been long since they announced their break. I felt like she couldn't really talk honestly about the song in the promo without feeling bad so she kept repeating that instagram stuff and kinda ran out of sound bites.

Perfect Illusion was the only logical first single choice, A-YO isn't big enough, I can't believe some of the absolutely ridiculous single choices people come up with here.    The singles should have been         1. Perfect Illusion     2. A-YO            3. Million Reasons           4. Dancin' In Circles                                           end of tbh

Also, I don't exactly remember what interview it came from, but I remember her saying that she didn't choose the lead single, and that the label chose it, but then quickly backtracked and said that "We chose it together" or something like that.

I feel like the label just thought it would be a great lead single, which I still think it is, but the promo for the song was atrocious.

Yes A-yo would have responded well with the public and radio and Gaga would actually have promoted the song since it seems to be one of her favorites. I mean A-Yo actually has more promo then PI and it's not even a single :rip:

Gaga obvs do not care much for PI for some reason. A song that doesn't even the singer supports doesn't seem lika good choice for a lead single to me.

A-Yo has single potential but not lead :awkney:

actually, i think no other song on Joanne would fit as a lead, PI was the perfect choice even tho it didn't chart well.

I kind of agree. Exept maybe Diamond Heart. Something about it sounds like a comeback song

but i agree PI was the best for comeback single

I think it only under performed cuz:

- Gaga wasnt that popular

- Fans werent into song or video and werent as zelous in requesting it on radio

- Its not a song ppl generally like first listen and many probably just didnt give it another chance and the song tanked

She made it pure to make a hit single even in the making of video she said it needed to be the smash of the summer but it's not even close tbh. I still don't really think any of the songs would do well period because nothing really jumps out except PI which got abandoned too early

If the label picked I wouldn't be surprised if they were hoping on the whole Taylor speculation. It's a great song too but labels are after that easy promo and gossip can do a song good but only if enough people hear it to speculate about. I think maybe it needed more performances maybe? She did a lot of radio interviews but then the song didn't get a lot of radio play from them so it was all a bit weird. Her vocals are so epic in it that I feel if she did even 1 or 2 TV performances it would have been more of a hit. It's so catchy!

I feel like they took a gamble

probably assumed after Oscars and Super Bowl Anthem and expected return her lead would likely do well so they planned to save all promo for second single and have two hits in a row and get her back up high in popularity

exept PI didnt do great

I don't think they were thinking about the Oscars and the Super Bowl at that time, those were months apart, and while Gaga absolutely slayed both, it'd be stupid to think that just because she did well during the beginning of the year, that people will just remember that.

They did take a gamble with PI, but the thing that just sort of bugs me is that Gaga herself didn't even seem too interested in the song.

She needs to be innovative without being experimental? and not draw on any personal experience? You don't ask for much do you ? :awkney:

Maybe, but Lady Gaga is doing what she wants since 2013, and I love her but she does not think about her fans anymore. She is very egocentric and really only thinks about herselft since ARTPOP.

Here's to our brand new start, I won't be waiting for nothing. I'll mend the broken parts. Pick up the pieces,

I think Perfect Illusion's subject matter is more Joanne for me than A-YO so honestly it could have been either.

A-YO is done tho honestly.  I'm waiting for her to announce Hey Girl

She's always just made the music she wants to make though? Since the beginning. Sometimes you've liked and clearly you haven't liked it other times but it's not a new thing of hers.

A-YO should've been the lead.

1. A-YO

2. Million Reasons

3. Dancin' In Circles

4. Joanne

Id throw Hey Girl before Joanne if we really needed another single just because it's the only feature.  John Wayne, Perfect Illusion and Diamond Heart should've been promo singles with videos.

While I love PI and don't look mind it as lead, I agree that it would have been a great buzz/promotional single.

3 points in and ready for more
