BLM wants slavery reparations as part of agenda

The ancestors of slave owners still benefit from old money made on the back of slave labour. The ancestors of slaves should also see some money.

How would they determine who gets the reparations though? Not all black people in the U.S. are descended from slaves.

All black Americans who can trace their ancestors many generations back probably are descendants of slaves.

But then we have the Latino/Hispanic blacks. They are probably also descended from slaves but from another country. Would they get money? 6% of Southerners (the wealthy, basically) owned slaves at the height of slavery in the U.S. I can't remember the percentage of African slaves brought over but I think Brazil had like 35% of all slaves in the Americas at one point. Would Latin American nations who are mostly poor have to pay as well? Countries who proportionally had MORE slaves than the U.S.?

The ones who aren't descended from slaves are the current immigrant Africans. They are still black and probably face the same issues BLM stands for. Yet they would not be eligible for this money.

Who would be paying this money? The government? Where would it come from?

Reparations to one group would spark cries from other races/ethnicities wanting similar reparations and it would get SO messy.

I really can't ever picture this actually happening and being done in a fair and orderly way. Impossible.

I share the belief that improving black communities and giving them the skills to succeed would be the better way to go. Not just handing out money.

Okay, so how do we discern who pays the reparations? Only from people who are proven to be the ancestors of slave owners?

I don't claim to know the details  It's a complicated undertaking, nobody would deny that, but I think it's a little unfair to demand that I would have the specifics of reparations completely down at this moment.

I reccomend reading this article on the case for reparations: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/

And this article on what reperations might look like: http://gawker.com/what-reparations-in-america-could-look-like-1633066247

I think it's too early to be talking about the exacts of what reparations are going to look like, first I think the case needs to be made that reparations are necessary because the majority of the U.S don't believe it is necessary.  They don't understand why reparations would be a good thing.

Once that is achieved, or close to being achieved, then I think we can have a stronger conversation about the particulars. For now I think it's an unreasonable request.

I'd read what I wrote above, but I'd also take a look at this Gawker article which addresses many of your questions in their interpretation of how reparations could work.

I'm not endorsing that as how I think reparations should be done, but it's a nice example of how it could be possible and how it could work.

I've started reading both as I saw you respond to the other user! I imagined you'd quote me with a similar response. Thanks.

Just set aside $100,000,000 and let them each get a piece. Boom, done. Then move on.

Also, do other people get reparations? Mexicans? Chinese? What about the Irish?

Sit down with that Irish mess.

Why don't they get reparations for potato famine, subjugation and being slaughtered in the Middle Ages? :/

Of people of the salve eras, yes. My grandparents get money for being holocaust survivors.

Ancestors of slaves, no. Though I agree that black communities get money but not an individual person.

https://policy.m4bl.org/end-war-on-black-people/  < much better link

reparations depends on what form of help and you have to make sure every race gets something because that could be a great way for whites to divide our races by making it a black only thing while mexicans who lost their land and natives who suffered genocide sit there and get nothing. divide and conquer through reparations for blacks could be a thing :laughga:

demilitarize the police? like taking away their arms and swat vans and stuff? :emma: sorry but when a crazy riot breaks out or MR or Mrs terrorist go nuts on civilians i want our police to be able to have equal firepower and protection to combat them. not in our ISIS era

decriminalize drugs? yes. and safe injection clinics as well for addicts

immediate release for drug offenders? depends on how long they've already served. take that case by case because someone could go in and be there for 3 years and be worse than they went in upon release. i like the idea but there could definitely be people in there who have since joined gangs in prison that you wouldnt want released without some type of real rehabilitation program. and getting rid of their criminal record so they can get a job easier. legalize prostitution :sis: for it

lots of socialist **** in what they want for taxes. i'm never sure how this will work because big corporations will find a way to avoid this or just close up shop. i'm never sure about this stuff so w/e. this is why i was hesitant to support bernie.

i like the political changes but not sure about releasing political prisoners because some of them might be actual terrorists :laughga: . case by case basis

free access to universities for only blacks? should be a goal for everyone regardless of race.

"An immediate end to the criminalization and dehumanization of Black youth across all areas of society including, but not limited to; our nation’s justice and education systems, social service agencies, and media and pop culture."  i'm never really for censorship since what people find offensive is so subjective. this all sounds good but you never really know how it is enforced since its subjective.

"An end to the use of past criminal history to determine eligibility for housing, education, licenses, voting, loans, employment, and other services and needs."  employers have the right to know if they're employing a sex offender or former violent criminal. maybe after a certain amount of time, the history can be altered to say rehabilitated or something but you cant run from your past. maybe non violent criminal history can be done away with but it depends on the crime.

this is all a pipe dream tbh. not realy believing anyone in government will give this list of demands the time of day

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Because this is 2016, the only people we feel remorse for from the past are non-white people. :saladga:

The country is broke, we can't afford it sorry,

The Obama administration has said it is prepared to sign a 10-year “memorandum of understanding”that significantly raises the $3.1 billion a year the United States currently grants Israel under an existing agreement that expires in 2018. In addition, Congress has provided additional money for missile defense.

Over months of secret negotiations that picked up steam late last year, Netanyahu was holding out for as much at $5 billion a year, according to accounts in the Israeli news media.

You can afford it. :neyde:
