gagzus 24,919
The leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will gather on Monday to sign a deal designed to kick-start the break-up of the United Kingdom, The Telegraph can disclose. At an unprecedented summit in Cardiff, the three first ministers will put pen to paper on a joint declaration demanding the right to hold independence referendums. The meeting comes after Andy Burnham suggested to MPs that he would authorise another Scottish referendum if there were a “clear consensus” in favour of one. The summit will come two days after Donald Trump declared that he would “love” to see a united Ireland. During a visit to Dublin on Saturday, he said Northern Ireland joining the Republic would be “a great thing” and asked: “How can it be bad?” https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/09/13/irish-scots-and-welsh-leaders-meet-to-plot-break-up-uk/ 1

I am thinking main root of this is still the Brexit right? Yeah a big thing is that British Politics and issues are England centric. Take Reform UK for instance, their biggest support and wins have been predominately to England with barely any in the other three nations—yet Reform is currently around third in the overall polling for the country. Not to mention the majority of Remain votes came from the other nations and the split was only 49% Remain 51% Leave. 1

The world has been slowly slipping into this since the early 80s, because we’re stuck in a nostalgia circle for “old times” when what people really mean is they wish for wilful ignorance again.

So that working class anger turned into resentment against westminster which led to the SNP/Plaid Cymru taking power on Scotland/Wales. N.Ireland is just a case of the republican movement being almost entirely united behind a singular party while the unionist/loyalist movement splits between 3/4. So even with the STV system, it dilutes their power to the point that we have the first nationalist first minister in Belfast. As the SNP's 16 year run in power has shown though, support for the nationalist parties isn't necessarily translating into independence support on a 1:1 ratio. Its just that local residents want better representation and see the nationalist parties as much more focused on their region than UK wide parties. Not to say Brexit hasn't impacted the parties vote shares. But its done it in various ways that sees some demographics turn pro-indy because of it and others turn anti. I’d argue it even stems all the way back to Thatcher and how she essentially stoked division within the UK even from region to region. She was a deeply English centric politician who used the word Britain when what she really meant was England. She even stoked the North/South divide even more than it had been historically despite the fact she herself was from the North. Plus the crash, brexit and the consistent passing of leadership doesn’t help either. And then parliament is a pretty English centric body anyway. I mean the initial successes of the SNP predate Thatcher, and the SNP helped bring down Callaghan and get Thatcher elected in 79 because they failed to get the Scottish parliament referendum over the line. In the resulting 79 election, the SNP lost most of their seats to Tories not Labour or the Liberals. And as we know, this led to the destruction of virtually all scottish industry and is the reason why poverty and substance abuse hit the peaks it did in Scotland. Personally, I'll never trust the nationalist parties in Scotland & Wales as far as you can throw em. They've spent decades deliberately pushing for harm against vulnerable groups to prop up their support. The gays know how to party

Tbf this is the first time all three of them have collectively said they want independence and are standing together about it. But ironically it’s parliament (which is majority English) that has to agree to the referendums, and even then it goes off of the public of all three nations. So there’s no guarantee they’d win independence, some could some could not, or all could or all might not. Plus they’d all be in massive trouble financially, because of the economics of how much money the British tax payers collectively give them as nations. For example Scotland’s taxes dont go just to Scotland they are split to all 4 nations. Same for the remaining 3. Ireland would become unified due to the Good Friday Agreement, with their colliding healthcare systems being a big issue since NI currently uses the NHS where as the ROI has something closer to the US’s. Plus their religious beliefs and laws related to religion clash. But Scotland and Wales would be the worst off (especially Wales) Because becoming independent nations would require them to create more housing, infrastructure, borders, a parliament of their own and other things like more universities, libraries, schools etc. Because by closing off from a 4 nation union to individual nations would mean populations would increase within the nations because people can’t migrate around the UK as easily anymore. Then there’s the issue of citizenship and immigrant status, because, university students, long-distance travel workers, people who moved from one nation to another already. All of that plays into it, because they’d essentially become immigrants and need visas or citizenships to remain in another nation. Rail networks would need changing to establish borders, they’d need to supply their own individual food imports and exports which would mean having to invest in airports, airfields, shipyards and new customs checkpoints. They’d need permission to fly imports over another nation’s airspace or England’s permission to use the channel and the channel tunnel… there’s so much that actually would go into it that in modern life I think it’s virtually impossible for them to become independent. If this had happened say during the Industrial Revolution sure it’d be easier, but how life works now it’s virtually impossible. Like an extreme but also realistic example, when they have to expand infrastructure and housing in their own nations—how would they deal with the protests and backlash from environmentalist groups? Because in order to do that you essentially have to de-forest a lot of the countryside in all the countries, of which there’s a LOT. LOVEDRUG 11,346
The UK breaking up would be a catastrophe. All three governments are running substantial deficits, and are only able to provide the services they do because of the way funding works with devolution in the UK. This isn't a huge deal with Northern Ireland, as they'd likely be uniting with the South (the economy would be the least of their problems), but the SNP and Plaid Cymru stating that an independent Scotland and independent Wales would join the EU right away are just blatantly lying. All nationalist parties in the UK (including Reform) are swindlers and grifters as far as I'm concerned, and you don't get a pass just because you have some progressive policies. That said, though there are plenty of practical arguments against it, most of all, I do think the 2014 pro-union slogan 'Better Together' really sums it up. In an increasingly unstable, hostile and divided world, it makes obvious sense that four countries, which have far more in common with each other than they do with any other countries on Earth, would stick together. The UK is a project that all four countries had a hand in creating, not just England, and I'd much rather we work to make the reality reflect that, rather than all go our separate ways.
