BLM wants slavery reparations as part of agenda

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A coalition affiliated with the anti-racism Black Lives Matter movement called for criminal justice reforms and reparations for slavery in the United States among other demands in its first policy platform released on Monday.

The six demands and roughly 40 policy recommendations touch on topics ranging from reducing U.S. military spending to safe drinking water. The groups aim to halt the "increasingly visible violence against Black communities," the Movement for Black Lives said in a statement.

The agenda was released days before the second anniversary of the slaying of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown's death, along with other fatal police shootings of unarmed black men over the past two years, fueled a national debate about racial discrimination in the U.S. criminal justice system.

This is the first time these black-led organizations linked to the decentralized Black Lives Matter movement have banded together to write a comprehensive foundational policy platform.

The agenda calls for an end to the death penalty, decriminalization of drug-related offenses and prostitution, and the "demilitarization" of police departments. It seeks reparations for lasting harms caused to African-Americans of slavery and investment in education and jobs.

The Movement for Black Lives said in a statement that "neither mainstream political party has our interests at heart."

"By every metric – from the hue of its prison population to its investment choices – the U.S. is a country that does not support, protect or preserve Black life," the statement said.

No  prostitution not only lets some people feed drug addiction, it encourages the objectification of women (and men to a lesser extent), and common sense would say it helps to spread STDs but I'm not sure if there's any statistical proof of that.

Racially tied slavery's been over for a while. No slaves (at least, not the ones they're talking about) are still alive so...if we're giving out things to people whose ancestors were treated badly, I'm part Native American...where's mine?  a quarter of me took another quarter's continent...who am I supposed to be angry at? I also have a black great grandparent so now I'm just really confused.

 Not to say I agree or disagree, but I would like to state...

It's not healthy that people who are willing to withhold hostility, to those who they believe are the cause of their suffering. I'm not going to hold resentment to anyone whom happens to be white, because of the history of slavery.  

 I'm not going to even mention that only 5% of the world's population owned slaves. 

 My motto is and will always be to treat others the way you want to be treated. Those whom I come across, who don't follow, won't receive my effort of humanities. 

I don't hold an ill intent/or resentment towards races, religions and sexualities, based on the mere history of certain individuals, and not the entirety. 

 Why can't the predominant amount of our species, realize that there are threatening appointments, at large. We're sitting here turning our weapons to each other (literally ; ever day) when there are such bigger threats, than the color of someone's skin. I'm not belittling any history of my own, and anyone else's, for that matter. But, most of the time, we hold irrational fear to those who and things that aren't even the slightest of threat.

I pretty much agree with you except for prostitution. It's been legal here in NZ for over a decade and there are no problems whatsoever. If it is legalised, then the govt can regulate the industry, which means they can impose rules such as mandatory STD checks, restrictions on where and when they can 'advertise' etc. Since the its legal police can then monitor it and reduce forced sex work more easily. As for objectifying women, it's their body, they should be able to do what they want with it. And I think p0rn (which is legal) has had a much worse impact on objectification than prostitution ever will.

Im constantly debating with other feminists about whether or not prostitution should be legalized and its not juts against SWERFs, but rational liberal-radical-marxist 3rd wave feminists, so I'm conflicted on that.

It's not a matter of "should", but rather, people disagree about the possible effects and in places where it has become legal or rather decriminalized the results have varied. It has been a net gain in some places, a net loss in others.

That being said, I'm okay with the rest of it I think, I'm honestly shocked reparations weren't already given to slaves and their relatives  If we are gonna do that, lets give reparations to all minority groups who have been wronged by the government in the past (and led to systematic discrimination/oppression today~) just to be fair though, especially since no slaves are still living; it kind of widens the scope of things.
