Black teenager gets tazered and beat up by police for dancing in public

Rochester, NY — Brendan Carter was on his way to see his sick uncle last week when he was detained by multiple security officers in the public RTS bus station in Rochester, subsequently assaulted by police and arrested — all over his dancing.

According to Carter, he was waiting for the bus to visit his uncle who is in the hospital. Apparently overcome by emotion, Carter said he put his headphones in and started dancing to avoid crying. This dancing got the attention of DHS employees and security officers at the station.

He was immediately accused of being drunk (which is not a crime, even if he was) and he was told to leave. A scene ensued after the initial confrontation as Carter refused to leave because all he wanted to do was get on the bus to visit his uncle.

Rochester police were quickly dispatched and the already tense situation would only explode from this point.

After he agreed to leave, Carter began walking out of the station. However, the officer was on an apparent mission to intensify the already-delicate situation.

When the officer arrives, instead of talking to the young man to get his side of the story, or letting him leave like he was doing, he immediately escalates to violence by grabbing Carter and then presenting his taser.

Within seconds, Carter is tasered, physically assaulted, slammed to the ground and arrested.

The entire scene was captured on video by NY Black Panther chapter member Daryl Appleberry. Had Appleberry not been there, this scene could have gotten far worse. Perhaps that is why we hear the RTS security officer’s radio go off, “Annie, get this guy out of there with the camera behind you. Get him out of there!”

Carter was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and trespassing. He was in a public space.

This is soooo uncomfortable to watch. Even if he was drunk it doesn't matter he was clearly making no threat at all. In fact he kept actually stepping away from the security guards and they just closed in on him every time!?

And the way they're told to remove the man with the camera at the end. How blatantly guilty can you be?

I don't really understand that hate for black people on the U.S. Why would someone hate other human being because of their skin? It's disgusting. Black people have an interesing culture, which I adore, I have lots of black friends even tho I'm from Chile and they're the sweetest, funny and amazing people I've ever met. Seriously.

Honestly he should've just left when they told him to leave to avoid getting arrested. And if they were gonna arrest him he shouldn't have resisted like he did. Can't take any chances with these cops anymore. Thank God I'm not black.

It's sad that the beginning of your post is the kinds of things people say to defend police in these situations. I'm glad you followed it up with what you did, though. 

Sure, the guy should have listened to the cops, but the cops shouldn't have made a big deal out of this in the first place. And if he would have left he could have missed his bus. Also, sure- he shouldn't have resisted arrest, but the cops shouldn't have arrested him in the first place. In some situations it's like cops just jump to the extremes.

I thought the same thing as I was watching, and if it was me in his shoes then I probably would've done just that. But then I thought that, like... That shouldn't be what you have to resort to. They shouldn't be treating people like this. So in that sense I completely respect him and the guy filming for standing up to them. It was brave. He wasn't violent or threatening.

It would've been better for him in that moment, but I suppose in a "greater good" kind of way now that it's on camera and circulating online it might get more attention and wake a few more people up to this obvious problem. So sad Charged for "trespassing" in a public space and hearing the order to remove the guy with the camera... Just so obvious and really heartbreaking.

Although, resisting makes everything worse. Why not just turn around and explain everything at the office ( I KNOW it's not easy to get out of or tell about the situation, but it would make problems less than what it is now ). I honestly would not think that this even has to do with race. This is just a case of someone who tries to tell that he was just there dancing. But the security officers didn't want him there, because he seemed "drunk"? 

I don't know why the race card is being pulled here. It has NOTHING to do with his skin color. It disgusts me everyone is pulling the card, just because the victim was black. 

The security officer was black aswell, it didn't even matter when it comes to skin color. It was just a matter of what they thought he was doing there and how his condition was. 

What happened before? Did he listen to the first warning for leaving the area? Do we know that? It's all what you guys haven't seen, this is all disregarded from what happened at the hospital, because if I were told that I could not stay there by security officers, I would have left aswell. DANCING OR NOT. I would just dance somewhere else lol.

that security officer is black herself and she was against him. this is not a racist thing.

and you are not allowed to be drunk in public - public intoxication is a misdemeanor in some places, and in most is an offense that you can get held overnight for and pay a fine (idk about new york though actually)

that guy was yelling the whole entire time. a lot of the time someone complains about how they were treated by the police, they were yelling and screaming and fighting in every was possible except with their fists (sometimes police suck and will take advantage of you if you're quiet and complacent, so i understand that)

 

anyway i feel the black guy could have handled that situation way better. there has to be a reason all those security officers were called. the video starts with him surrounded and screaming. he's pretty hot though and has a great beard.

that final police officer should not have detained him like that though because he was already walking away, but i see his point too. he arrived on the scene and sees a guy rushing away from a group of security guards, what is he supposed to do? he was detaining the guy so he could ask him questions. the black guy pushed back against the police officer and that's why he was tazed. so i see everybody's point.

 

the black guy probably still was fighting at the end though because at that point he probably would have been arrested and charged with something even if originally he wasn't doing enough to get arrested for. sucks for him. hard to say but i dont feel like this is racism at all.

Although I understand your perspective and you are right that it is abuse of power, I can guarantee you that if he was white this would have ended differently. If you live in the US you know the prejudice against blacks by the police. The police thinks a black person is a threat much quicker than they do with whites. (Not ALL police officers, but the pattern is observed).

Why is it that new age racists always write up 4 page essays in order to justify police brutality and reach out into every cardinal direction to deny that racism is a big part of American police culture. As if a black woman tagging along to take out a dancing teenager changes any of the situation.

Yes, but how long have they been talking there, why just not call it a day and leave the area. I understand he wants to tell his story, but lord, just leave for the sakes of what it is and send a letter with a complain about what happened. As a black guy, he should know what to expect when a cop arrives. It's corrupted definitely, but he would have known the consequences though as soon as a police officer would arrive. 

This police officer was wrong in handling this situation. Abusing his rights of power ( which failed at first try ). He should be fired or put on "offduty?" for a long while.
