Ariana and Tate borrow from TMB

I’m in Montreal this weekend and saw Ariana on Friday, and just got home from Osheaga music festival today where Tate headlined. 

I thought both shows were really fun but I couldn’t help but notice that they each borrowed pretty obviously from Mayhem Ball. 

Ariana’s set is like a two story house, with little arches and rooms, and honestly it looked so similar to Gaga’s Opera house I was surprised. There’s even a visual where the whole house burns up!  Ariana also has a song where she starts singing backstage while we can see it on a video on the screen until she emerges on the stage to finish the song. (It was obviously prerecorded tho because in the video they’re combing and fluffing her long hair just before she comes on stage and when she did emerge she had a tight bun. But she was still so amazing it’s fine)  VERY Gaga-coded  

Tate’s set tonight also had a lot of architectural arches and stairs which again reminded me of the Opera house. And then before she came out the pre-show video was Tate writing in script a long document. It totally reminded me of Gaga writing with that feather. And then she chose a song to have a camera following her while she did a barricade walk.

Mayhem Ball is the tour that has become the gold standard I fear and we love to see it

I don't doubt it. Katy herself has tried to replicate Stupid Love, Chromatica and Mayhem
