Canadas dirtiest Province Alberta home to the oil Sands and 97% of Canadas oil reserves as well as largest Coal and Natural Gas reaerves is introducing a Carbon Tax for 2017

 

The right Winged Conservatives which were in power for 40 years straight never approved of such measures but the new Government that began rulling this year does

 

Alberta is also the only Province in Canada to still generate over 50% of electricity from Coal, something the new Premier pledged to change

It puts a tax on carbon so it encourages them to find ways to pollute less

 

but Were also high cost producers and oil prices are already low. This will crush companies if they dot cut taxes elsewhere

 

if it was up to me id have the carbon tax but cut the general toyalties they pay regardless of what they pollute so they arent overly burdened

Thank god for this. With all the climate change marches happening soon (I'm attending one next weekend) and the one that would have happened in Paris, are going to instigate a huge movement. 2017 is going to be a good year for the environment.  Well, it needs to be otherwise we are using up time we don't have. This is one thing that needs to happen.

Decades ago??? Canadas oil sands didnt start growing mich until early 2000s

 

and US shale not till late 2000s. These are relatively new forms of oil!!!

yeah i agree. But to not damage economy u must lower taxes else where. If u create carbon taxes but dont lower others u just increase tax burden

Lower which ones? Any in general or taxes aimed at a specific industry? Who's tax burden are we worried about here?

A carbon tax increases tax for everyone. For polluters the most but even everyone else when u pay for gasoline to drive to work, or other businesses to transport their goods

 

so ud lower income taxes, business taxes and even corporate taxes slightly to compensate for higher taxes taken via carbon

That's the part that most Liberals don't get.  Every industry and economic entity is dependent on another part of the economy.  Raising taxes on gas, for example,  means that everyone who drives a motorized vehicle has to pay, therefore the tax on fuel is a tax on everyone who has to go somewhere.

but a carbon tax still has benefits on promoting effeciency on consumption of fuels as well as making green alternatives more competitive on a relative basis

 

im not against carbon taxes, im only against tax burdens going up in general

 

so I support carbon taxes as long as other taxes are reduced enough to compensate the equivalent that carbon taxes will raise costs by...

 

in effect, replacing one type of tax with the other

If you want to distinctive a particular segment of business, that's one tool the gov. can use.  The U.S. gov. is trying to mandate toxic emissions on energy producers, and they are getting sued.  So the ability to levy tax may be a more effective way to bend the private sector to their goals, whether the right wing conservatives agree or not. 

Hopefully, they will give tax breaks to renewable research and proven technologies to further swing the economy away from fossil 'fuels'
