i still dont get the point here....

just because whites have the more privilege, we blame a single white person?

its blaming some random dog on the street just because your dog pooped on your couch.

the person to blame here is who gave her the privilege.

i also dont get why whites cant sing rap music?

does that mean black cant sing white music?

im just inferring from some of the posts here using it as arguments.

I've heard British people comment on The Beatles sounding American when they sing too.

It's because the music seemed so American, it just seemed right.

omfg. music has color now? american? african-american? it 'seemed' right?

this sounds too biased. sorry.

im no expert here.

but i saw a documentary on one of my classes.

its the tongue's structure which makes singers lose their accents.

lots of people lose their accents when singing. not everyone. but some.

sometimes, its not their choice whether they drop their accent or not.

Billboard article:

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop-shop/6415065/will-i-am-commends-iggy-azalea?utm_source=twitter

will also thanks Blonde for doing Rapture in 1980, first rap song to go #1.

This comment is interesting:

Iggy Azalea's entire career is MANAGED by BLACK people. She's the one bringing the bacon for T.I., Jay-Z and the rest of the Def Jam Records. Stop saying its T.I. doing the shoe shining job because he's actually the one calling the shots for Iggy's career.

It's where he started. He knows it. He understands it. IT IS WHERE HIS CAREER STARTED. Just because I stop swimming for a few years does not mean I don't know how to swim. This isn't simply about"genre", or whether or not you like his music, this is about the culture behind it.

You do not forget a culture you were a part of, it stays with you.

So again, our opinions on his music and his artistic choices mean NOTHING, because he was a hip-hop artist starting out, and there is a culture behind that, that he understands and as such his opinion does carry weight. Whether you like his latest song or not means nothing.

Wow! :giveup::applause: :applause:

Azealia is pissed off at what Iggy is representing, and that is this continuation of white supremacy and power in every aspect of everything. From music, to hair, to agriculture... the majority of thing you think were started by white people were actually started by black people. Black people have nothing they can call their own anymore because, as I just stated, white people keep going "ooh that's cool" and taking it away and making all the money from it.

On top of that, Azealia is pissed at Iggy on a personal level for not recognizing the privilege and extra boost she has in life and bringing awareness to the fact that she is culturally appropriating black culture.

And no one gave Iggy this privilege, no one gave any white person their privilege. The only way we can continue to successfully move on in this world is if we (white people) recognize our privilege and how everything favors us on a institutional level.

On a personal level, it's a completely different story!! But i'm not getting into that.

For your second argument, here are my thoughts. White people can do rap and hip-hop. It's fine. When it becomes a problem is when it turns into a mockery of black culture. Banks' comparisons to a minstrel show, in my opinion, are valid.

I don't know how aware and knowledged you are of minstrel shows, but here's a quick overview. Minstrel shows were created in the early 20th century. White people would put on black face, take the stereotypes created by white people about black people (the mammy, the zipcoon, the brood, the connection of black people to watermelon and chicken etc.) and expand on them for entertainment and profit.

[if you don't know about the origins of these stereotypes, I suggest looking into it because it's a really revealing part of US history that isn't talked about anywhere in usual white-washed history books. And it's really disgusting and disappointing]

But, going back, is Iggy not doing that? She taking the black stereotypes of living a "ghetto" lifestyle and using different dialects (which is seen by many as inferior to proper "white english") and using them to profit from and use as entertainment.

I dunno if that makes any sense. This is such a complicated topic, especially on the internet, because you have so many people coming together from all different places and value sets, it's hard to have a smart, educating conversation.

If anyone has questions, I'm happy to answer to the best of my ability, from the perspective of a privileged white male.
