Janet Jackson facing backlash for Tweeting #AllLivesMatter

Janet Jackson is taking LOTS of heat today from her own fans... When tweeting a link to a fan-made video supporting the #BlackLivesMatter movement using her 1997 song "Can't Be Stopped," she included the hashtag #AllLivesMatter (alongside #BlackLivesMatter and several others). Twitter users accused her of being ignorant to the sensitivity surrounding #AllLivesMatter (and I see their point; of course, "all" lives matter, but it is diminishing the momentum and in many cases attempts to invalidate what #BlackLivesMatter stands for, which is bringing visibility and awareness to the fact that there is blatant disregard for black lives among the US law enforcement community).

It's unfortunate, as Janet's heart is clearly in the right place. But, at the same time, as an influential voice in this fight, it's disheartening to see she is not attuned to the sensitivities.

[Side note: the video itself was created by @ithl123, the same creator of my favorite YouTube voiceover parody series, The Legends Panel!!!]

I mean, it's enough. I will pass it because this moment is about black lives, but every other day of the year I won't focus on one group, I'll focus in everyone.

The comparison at the beginning is stupid, clearly stupid. :interestinga: the rest is okay.

Yeah, the lead in is pretty dumb, agreed!! But they do pull it together and make their point with the rest.

Because #AllLivesMatter was just used as a deflection to stop people from talking about black lives. Of course everybody's lives matter, but the whole point of BLM is that society is treating black lives as if they don't matter. Black men are more likely to be killed by cops.

You don't see All Lives Matter groups marching in the street when another unarmed black guy gets shot dead... Because it's not a real organisation, it's not a group of people that care about actual progress or change, it's a group of people that are trying to draw attention away from the black lives matter campaign.

All Lives Matter are the equivalent of Meninists as a counter to Feminism or Straight Pride as a response to Gay Pride. It's just a bunch of privileged folk trying to bury any discussion of inequality.

These ppl need to calm down...

She clearly did not say "all lives matter" as in "it's not only black ppl, folks!"...that would be ignorant and insensitive, but that's just not how she used it.

What I see there is ppl reacting to a buzzword (buzz expression?) without taking context into consideration...she's a black woman, that's older than most of the ppl complaining, which means she has lived through times in which racism was not as "frowned upon" as it is today...of course she didn't mean to minimize any tragedy or to pretend that black ppl are not a constant target to police brutality...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

I hate BLM more than anyone but even I understand the reason behind the name.. its saying that in todays society, all lives matter expect for Black Lives and so they are asking for everyone else to recognize that black lives matter too.

No offense taken! I just relate to the world via pop culture, and this Janet issue today has truly opened my eyes to the sensitivity around #AllLivesMatter ... I've learned something and become more aware because this took place.
