Is Gaga a feminist?

The concepts of feminism haven't been "mainstream" until just recently. Back when Gaga denied being a feminist, it was still a hazy subject and had negative connotations. There was no such thing as tumblr and she probably didn't learn much about it in school (considering she went to catholic school and dropped out of college). I probably wouldn't have fully admitted to being a feminist in 2008, so I don't blame her either. I actually think it's quite unfair that her fans are still bringing up those statements from 09. They're irrelevant. People grow and change their minds. Stop bringing up that old-ass interview.

 

She has since then changed her response to that question. And although she still says some things that are questionable, I get the gist of what she's saying. She, personally, likes it when a man takes control and that is okay. That IS feminism. Each individual has the right and freedom to express themselves in whichever way they want... submitting to her man is how she chooses to express herself s-xually.

 

 

 

THAT is what I think she meant with that statement.

 

The same sentiment is expressed in Gypsy, which we all know is about not wanting to change the person you're with.

 

Great post, and I totally agree. You don't have to follow any one particular "Feminist Rulebook" to be a feminist; it can be something different for every woman and man who wish to have that title. To me, being a feminist is about believing women AND men should have the ability to choose the role they play in society. It's about equality and freedom of choice. If Gaga chooses to be submissive, then that is her choice and she made it knowing she could also play the dominant role if she wanted to. 

 

(However, in G.U.Y. she takes on the "bottom"/submissive role, but touches on the actual power that the person in the submissive role holds. People usually think it's the dominant one that calls the shots, but really it's the submissive person that determines how far you can go, so who's really calling the shots there?)

I always find it kind of great seeing her statements on feminism evolve throughout her career. Even with her "I'm not a feminist" comment back in (... 2009??), she still greatly emphasized the power of femininity and the freedom of feminine s-xuality. Come 2011, with "I am a feminist", Scheiße, and so on- it's really nice to see a big figure in music bring all that up.

Of course she is! She likes to cook. It's in her nature. So just because she cooks food for Taylor and plays the typical housewife it doesn't mean she's a slave. Listen to aura.

In each song she speaks about the importance of being a strong female. G.U.Y. Is best to relate right now. "I don't need to be on top, to know I'm worth it 'cause I'm strong enough to know the truth" so she doesn't have to be a cold dictating leader when she can be loving and kind because Taylor treats her nicely like she deserves. Feminism isn't about always wanting to be in control. That's called a control-freak. Feminism is about being strong and powerful as a woman and it really can vary in ways to show this... You could directly show it by constantly rebeling to the athority of men OR you could simply show you have control over the relationship but you tend to not use it for arguements sake.
