Is anyone concerned that Gypsy is a racial slur?

I'm an english major.  :coffee:

She's calling herself a gypsy. "I'm a gypsy" is not comparing anything. The symbolism from the word could be a metaphor, but the lyrics are very literal.

"...grave and earth you" is a metaphor. for s-x. :hehe:

But she isn't in fact a gypsy. Would a--logy be more acceptable? :coffee:

Then by the same logic she is in love with the literal Judas because she sang 'I'm still in love with Judas' instead of 'I'm still in love with someone like Judas'?

If your definition of 'Gypsy' means 'persons of nomadic habit of life' then yes, and that's what I'm trying to say, then the song is not racist at all.

But if your 'Gypsy' means 'Romani people (or a certain race idk much)', which your thread is about, then you're wrong.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, she was writing it as if she was actually in love with Judas, but Judas was also symbolism for the bad.

I'm saying I don't think she means it in a negative way at all, but there are people who will take it as offensive which is unfortunate. The guy I was talking to was certainly pissed when I posted a lyric video on the status.  :toofloppy: lol

I'm not saying I think it is a racial slur here in America. It's a different meaning in other parts of the world.

I know that. But the way she worded it is not a comparison. haha It's a literal "I'm a gypsy", not meaning the racial group, but the kind of person who most people think of when hearing the word.

"I'M a gypsy." as in a person or an attribute.

A metaphor would be saying "I'm like a gypsy" Comparing herself to one, not proclaiming it. :)

Judas was a metaphor for sure, but gypsy is much more literal.

"Time is a thief" is a metaphor and it doesn't have to use 'like' to be one.

Gypsy is just an exonym. Some Romani people don't like to be called gypsies by foreigners but only because some people use the word in a derogatory way. And obviously she is not using the word in that way.

Some gypsies identify as such and others try to distance the word from them.I agree, but people can create backlash out of just that. Which is what my thread was about. I wish there was someone from Europe in the thread, because I think it's a wider known slur there.

She just wanted it to rhyme, right? haha.

I think she's way too intelligent to say things like those with bad intention. She was trying to represent everyone, not say "if you're hispanic you shoot streets up, steal and use d--gs and sharpie your brows in".

haha I am sure. But it could have been an interesting music video. lol

Exactly. That's a simile.

It could also be considered personification. haha  :derpga:

the word, gypsy, is a literal definition though, a way to describe herself. I just don't see how it is a metaphor for something she is stating flat out.

nope

Good thought. :P

Shakira had a song called Gypsy and everyone was fine with it.

Yeah, I don't think it will be too much of an issue, but this is Gaga and there are groups who try to raise awareness about this, so I am wondering if they'll *try* to go after Gaga since she is a bigger target.

Its not in the context of the song. That's all that matters

If the lyrics were something like "All these damn Gypsies trying to steal my car," then there would be an issue, but there isn't

If you wanted your opinion to be validated, Gagadaily is definitely the right place. The users here are about as socially conscious as Paula Deen.

There's that too. God, she can't do anything without getting some sh!t for it. That really annoys me. Today we're gonna see KatyCats claiming she's some copycat when both videos have no similarities

To be quite honest, it's in the back of my mind sometimes when I listen to it but the only "redeeming" aspect of it is that it is a term applied to many. So in a sense it kinda softens the blow of it directly targeting a specific group of people. Not saying it's all good and completely "right". But that tumblr girl is kinda right when it comes to opinions. The people/group linked to a racial slur or appropriation or struggle etc. are the one's who should have the most say opinion wise. I was more bothered by Gaga's white girl dreads (which I know didn't come from a harmful place). It was annoying seeing monsters on this site make the constant, nagging implication that her hair must be "dirty" because it was dreaded or that she should "burn that wig". It's subtle but reminiscent of the subconscious attitudes people carry about people of colors' hair and aesthetics.A lot of folks need to realize that it's not just "fashion" and it's not just pop culture, these are peoples' lives and every day struggles. So when people feel like their lives and hardships are being trivialized they get upset. Which is understandable. People really try it though with Gaga extra hard just because they don't like her and that's just a waste of time.

hahahahaha very true. I'm not asking for validation(because I don't think it is bad), just if they think it could hurt the song's chances if it was going to be a single.

Haha, the gold hair faces while the women are on the boat actually reminded me of the DH video. xD cheap cgi is what it looked like. HQ video will probably look nothing like DH. But yes, the cultural appropriation and CopyGa rants will begin in less than 24 hours.
