Amanda 0
I have no problems with it. I think the reason why some don't like it is because people wanted I Wanna Be With You more than the re-worked version that is now Dope.
Ladle Ghoulash 23,579
I don't love anyone like that, the voice is annoying, and I'm not a fan of d--g culture. By the standard of not liking d--g culture, you should be less a fan of MJH. Dope is about her moving on from excessive d--g use. XoXoJoanneGaga 629
Top 3 on the album for sure, it's a timeless song. It will age better than anything else on ARTPOP
Hewkah 48
For me it's the vocality. The way she sings the song. I don't like it at all. I prefer the sweetened version; the one she used for IWBWY

Ascetic 0
Pretty judgemental/insensitive on your part. I'm like an old person when it comes to ballads and there are very few people that can actually have a good ballad It's a hard act to perfect and not everyone can do it They're meant to showcase someone's voice with deep, almost autobiographical lyrics that people can relate too, and the whiskey voice combined with constant talk about d--gs is not great for me, nor others That's why it's got poor reception in this forum and in general when you ask people She's got a great voice, but the lyrics and tone don't really help her case
MJHolland 12,725
It's boring to me and I cannot relate to it at all for I have never done d--gs. Plus ballads usually showcase her amazing voice and it's not as amazing as it could be on Dope. It's also such a downer. That's my opinion at least. I'm glad that it can help other people though :) it's a song about forgiveness, and learning to forgive yourself and make amends. Though it is based on her personal struggles, UniversalGa prevails! scheiBist 3
I have a feeling there are a lot of Bitter Bettys cuz it ain't I Wanna Be With You. I personally thing Dope's lyrics are better than IWBWY's.
MJHolland 12,725
You might not like Dope, but I'm calling bull**** on your reasoning. One of Gaga's strengths is her vocal affectations. She sounds like David Bowie on Applause, she squeals like a pig and has a strange vocal affectation on Swine, she puts on a valley girl accent in Donatella, her M.I.A. style vocals on Jewels N' Drugs, soulful growls on Do What U Want, the vocals on Sex Dreams sound inspired by torch singers, the vocals on Gypsy are very Bruce Springsteen, aggressive rock vocals on MANiCURE, the weird accent she does on Aura...all of them are "fake". On most of The Fame her vocals are watered down and manipulated to sound like a pop star, she straight up sounds like Gwen Stafani on Summerboy. She puts on a German accent for Scheiße and a Mexican one for Americano. Her vocals on The Lady Is A Trampy are clearly an affectation to sound like a classic jazz singer. So even if the vocals on Dope are not natural and are character driven for the sake of the song, that doesn't make them bad. You just happen to not like them. Yes! All of this!!!! Babe, you just proved my point. That's why I don't like them. It's being presented as a raw confessional and it's just another character. I find it inauthentic. In your opinion, what is an example of an authentic (confessional) Gaga song/singing style. I have an issue with the presentation vs. the execution of the song. Does this make sense? Hmmmm.... maybe I just don't understand... But I don't have to say, I don't find the pain in her voice in this song to be fake at all. And I really don't think that she was "playing a character" all that much when writing the song either. In her life, she had become so dependent and numb from the d--gs she was abusing, she had felt as though she had lost everyone important in her life! Her loved ones couldn't reach her because her life was revolving around d--gs and not them. Also, she probably felt such a void where she used to have such an intimate connection with her fans; she has said many times before that the main reason she did d--gs was because she forgot for just a moment that she was famous (what Marry Jane Holland is about, not so much on how awesome d--gs are themselves!). Can you imagine how guilty that made her feel?? I can't fathom how lonely that must have been, not to mention painful. Just some thoughts. I mean if I went through that, my voice wouldn't be hitting all the notes or staying on pitch. Personally I think the song captures a fraction of the pain, so I don't think it's overplayed at all. But i've never fallen into d--g addiction, so I can't speak loads to the pain. Regardless of that though, I love this song because it stays relatable still. It tells a tale of seeking forgiveness from the ones that love you most, because in the end they are the ones that are gonna be there for you, and not some (insert less important / toxic / temporary thing in your life), and for her, the thing that consumed her was "dope"aka d--gs. Also it's about learning to forgive yourself just as much, which is seen very well in the second verse (strategically placed after the first one where she asks the people in her life to forgive her, then learning to forgive yourself next). I just think it's beautiful and actually has a universally important message once you get past the easy-to-make superficial a--lysis.

The song is written to be confessional and raw and personal and intimate and authentic. She was clearly aiming for her vocal performance to portray these characteristics. I'm bothered by the fact that she wrote such an honest and personal song (irregardless of my opinion towards the subject matter), then adopted a fake singing style. It bothers me that the song is so genuine and her vocals are not. I think it's a fine song intrinsically. I'm not wild about it or anything, but it's good. The performance of the song bothers me. You can convey emotion without having to completely alter the way in which you make sound.
Whispering 18,865
Yet still singing about it and how she needs it Not here for it Right...that's what addiction is.
