Battle 4 Ur Life 6,698
for me Stan wars exist since always...at least since the 90's...back then it was Britney vs. Xtina, Madonna vs. Mariah, Madonna vs. Janet Jackson, Mariah vs. J. Lo and so on... Gaga was just the new kid in the ring “Fantastic, chic, freak, slay.”
Hellspont 1,468
Twitter definitely multiplied it ten fold. :pukey:
gagaisitalian 3,573
I remember starting to actually defend Gaga when Britney was releasing FF. The Britney fans were so delusional and Little Monsters kinda of went hard on them. But then Madonna came and that started some ****. And now it's all about Gaga vs. Katy because of Katy's reign. LittleBoot 27
I started to see some fan debates online when it was Christina vs. Britney in the early 00s, but I think stan wars as we know them really escalated with the rise of social media. ARTPOPisaChoice 946
Who cares? I don't understand these Stan wars I just hated Katy Perry ever since she tweeted about Gaga after she released Alejandro saying "using blasphemy for entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke" nice Dark Horse video filthy hypocrite Thank you, someone who understandssssssssss. Hands up to the sky 🌧 I’ll be your galaxy 🌌
Nemo 4,291
This has come up before. I said then that, although the term didn't exist at the time, I knew for a fact -- and I'm not joking at all here -- that there were "stan wars" between Beatles and Rolling Stones fans back in the 1960's. Then some people chimed in with even older examples.
Mills 446
Stan wars within pop music fans started even prior to the rise of the internet with the excessive comparisons topped with the classic "my fave is better than yours" argument - from Madonna / Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in the 1990's, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in the early 2000's until the rise of Gaga by 2009. The only difference from now and then is social media which escalated the stan wars even further. But to answer the OP, when did the stan war involving the LM started? I'd say around 2010 when the infamous online comparisons of Gaga with the returning Christina Aguilera began. Insults and mockeries were thrown around on YouTube, particularly on the music videos of the two pop stars. It was also that year when Katy Perry tweeted something about "blasphemy being used as a form of an entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke" at a time when the controversial music video of Gaga's Alejandro got released. That only drew the ire of the LM. And to further add flame into the already heated argument, Katy's career was starting to become really huge as she started to collect #1 hits left and right from her Teenage Dream album (at a time when Gaga went into a hiatus in preparation for the release of Born This Way). And when the BTW era was about to start in 2011, so did a new stan war with another pop star who just released a new album - Britney Spears. Both lead singles debuted at #1 and the arguments between the LM and the Brit Army only grew more intense as 2011 went on. And then, Katy Perry tied Michael Jackson's HOT 100 record and the bandwagon fans started to call KP as the new Queen of Pop. And shortly afterwards, Adele took everything and literally ruled the charts. And all of these were happening at a time when Gaga could no longer top the charts, hence envy naturally ensued. By 2012, Madonna released MDNA and the stan wars only worsened with Madge's "reductive" remark against Gaga. And by 2013, Gaga basically went head-to-head with KP, inviting everyone's attention for inevitable chart comparisons and renewed yet another stan war. But this time, there's nothing to be bragged about on the part of the LM. And I'd like to believe this experience humbled everyone for good.
albert 108
Stan wars stopped with Gaga's #PROMOTEONLINEKINDNESS #MUSICNOTTHECHARTS campaign what are you talking about?

Mills 446
That was more like 2008, wasn't it? And of course, it was Perez who either started it, or jumped in near the beginning. Gaga wasn't yet prominent at that time for her to gain a sizeable amount of an online army enough for a notable stan war. I'm always under the belief that her (or her fans') first stan war occurred when the music video of Xtina's Not Myself Tonight got released in 2010. The comments section on YouTube at that time was unbearable since it was basically filled with posts from hardcore LMs who loved to compare Gaga to everyone back then. EDIT: Just reread your quoted post, yeah, the comparisons per se started by that time. My bad. I'm too focused with stan wars and how / when it started among the LM. unfitted 0
Gaga said in Howard Stern that people started this "mess" since Madonna's "reductive" controversy. I still assume that Madonna got her popularity back because of Gaga. (I know it's silly but yeah that's what I think)
