I disagree. It just has to be a smash song. Applause, arguably, was the strongest song on this record, although not anywhere close to my favs from TF for example. People are just not connecting enough to the songs themselves, hence the brand is suffering. Combine the brand and a killer song and the sky is the limit.

DWUW is a "smash" song from first listen, well at least to me. Releasing a smash song isn't the "easiest" route, given that the definition of what makes a song a "smash" is highly subjective. She could release the best single in the world from this album, but I doubt it'd sell as huge as we all want it to be, let alone score a #1 single, again simply because it's labeled as a Gaga single. I still strongly believe that seeking assistance from those who could re-build her public image back remains as the fastest and easiest approach for her to get that 4th #1. I'm not saying though that this should be imperative. Because taking the easy route has never been imperative for her to begin with.

What was the last time an R&B song sounding like DWUW smashed with itunes buyers? Look at how Beyonce singles struggle. Same way, there are clear musical reason why a noisy mess like MTN flopped. One of the bottom 4 songs on the BTW album.

Good songs like TEOG and Applause do fine in US.

And that's exactly the point. All of us have our own definitions of what makes a song a "smash". Hence, to simply release a song deemed to be a smash for some isn't the "easiest" approach to top the charts, particularly the HOT 100 chart. It's the reason why I brought up DWUW to that post which I've replied since we're talking about the "easy" way for Gaga to get that much-awaited 4th #1.

Can I add an interesting article in the US leg of artRAVE and the tour that actually is in Gaga's favor if you guys want something Gaga related to read?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jesselawrence/2014/01/24/miley-cyrus-bangerz-tour-could-learn-a-thing-or-two-from-lady-gagas-ARTPOP-tour/

Basically, it states that Lady Gaga has a really good strategy in terms of ticket sales, and the fact that she has significantly less excess tickets, while the Bangerz tour is still struggling.

Point one for Gagz :)

It is higher. That amount does not include all digital markets. It's definitely over 1.5 million.
